At Amesbury, English sits at the heart of our curriculum. We value its role in fostering creativity, critical thinking and communication, while also preparing pupils for a wide range of senior school pathways.

We are looking for a teacher who shares our passion for developing strong literacy foundations and who can nurture a genuine love of language and literature – both in the classroom and across the wider school community.

What You Will Do

  • Teach engaging, rigorous and imaginative English lessons across Years 6‑8 (with possible Year 5 teaching).
  • Inspire pupils to read widely, write creatively and communicate with confidence.
  • Work closely with the Head of Department and colleagues to uphold a strong, collaborative culture within the department.
  • Play a key role in planning, assessment and curriculum development, taking responsibility for specific year‑group coordination and contributing to enrichment activities.
  • Use assessment data thoughtfully to ensure all pupils are supported and challenged appropriately.
  • Work closely with Learning Support to provide a joined‑up, child‑centred approach.
  • Maintain excellent communication with parents and support strong school‑home partnerships.
  • Contribute to the broader life of the school through duties, pastoral care, trips, and co‑curricular activities linked to English and the arts.
  • Uphold and promote Amesbury's safeguarding culture at all times.

What We Are Looking For

Essential

  • A good honours degree in English or a closely related subject.
  • QTS or a recognised equivalent.
  • Strong subject knowledge and confident delivery of KS2/KS3 English.
  • Excellent communication – both verbal and digital – and strong organisational skills.
  • A collaborative approach and enthusiasm for contributing to a thriving department.
  • Secure understanding of effective pedagogical practice and openness to ongoing professional learning.
  • A keen pastoral intuition with a warm, empathetic approach to pupils and a commitment to high pastoral standards.
  • A willingness to contribute fully to school life beyond the classroom.

Desirable

  • Experience incorporating digital tools to enhance teaching and learning.
  • Experience leading an initiative, year group or area of curriculum development.
  • Interest in supporting co‑curricular English activities such as competitions, clubs, trips and workshops.

Why Amesbury?

  • A happy, supportive and highly regarded English department.
  • A beautiful setting in the Surrey countryside with a strong sense of community.
  • Colleagues who work collaboratively, share ideas generously and enjoy their work.
  • High‑quality CPD focused on research‑informed practice, reflective teaching and curriculum development.
