S. in Animal Science or related field to represent the program as a Certified Animal Safety Representative (CASR) on motion picture, television, commercial and new media locations.

Job Summary

Responsible for representing American Humane Hollywood’s No Animals Were Harmed® program on motion picture, television, commercial, and new media locations, to ensure humane treatment of animal performers, document housing and care, and record how scenes and stunts using animals are accomplished.

Advise on animal safety issues and uphold AH’s Guidelines for the Safe Use of Animals in Filmed Media.

Work includes contact with animal trainers, production executives, crew members, and occasionally the media.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Monitoring animal action in filmed media
  • Educate film personnel in humane matters and assist with the safety and welfare of animals involved
  • Report writing: provide timely, accurate, detailed reports describing animal action, safety precautions, and welfare considerations
  • Communication and diplomacy: work with program staff, production personnel, and external agencies as needed
  • Location of work assignments: CASRs may work in local and regional areas with travel as needed; international travel may be requested and is optional
  • Research: knowledge of animal species scheduled to perform; availability to research new species as required
  • Adhere to production processes and confidentiality requirements as applicable

Essential experience, knowledge, skills and abilities

• Must have one or more of the following qualifications

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM)
  • Registered/Licensed/Certified Veterinary Technician (RVT/LVT/CVT)
  • B. S. in Animal Science or related field from an accredited school, or equivalent combination of experience and education
  • Diversity of experience in animal health and behavior preferred
  • Commitment to animal welfare
  • Equine knowledge and experience preferred
  • Broad knowledge of animals (horses, snakes, spiders, fish, dogs, birds, goats, cats)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication; active listening
  • Diplomacy and collaborative relationship-building skills
  • Knowledge of special effects and stunts involving animals preferred
  • Ability to work effectively without direct supervision in the field
  • Detail-oriented and organized; good judgment
  • Ability to analyze situations and make recommendations quickly
  • Proficiency with email and report writing
  • Successful completion of the American Humane Society Certified Animal Safety Representative Training Course is required
  • Physical demands and work environment
  • Completion and passing of the CASR training during the probationary period (approximately 5 weeks: 1 week classroom, 4 weeks on-set)
  • Work on motion picture sound stages and location sets; ability to work outdoors in varied weather and rough terrain
  • Outdoor work in extreme cold or heat, wet or humid conditions
  • Physical activities such as walking, climbing, balancing, standing; occasional lifting of 10 kg or more
  • Excellent vision; valid driver’s license and ability to provide own transportation
  • Local, national and/or international travel as needed; on-call work with variable hours
