The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Alberta invites applications for a faculty position as part of a coordinated cluster of five positions focused on infrastructure resilience, environmental sustainability, and responsible resource development. The role is a full-time, tenure-track assistant, associate, or full professor position in Geoenvironmental Engineering with a focus on the interface between geotechnical and environmental engineering in mining applications.

Applicants will develop research on mine waste management, contaminated site remediation, biogeochemical processes, and emerging technologies such as advanced sensing, data science, robotics, and artificial intelligence. The successful candidate will have access to the Geotechnical Centre, the Water Research Centre, and the Centre for Computational Geostatistics, and is expected to establish multidisciplinary research programs and teach courses in at least two of the four related disciplines (geotechnical, mining, environmental, water resources).

Responsibilities
  • Teaching (40%): Provide classroom instruction, supervise student research, and offer mentoring and advising. Teach courses in environmental impact, site assessment, environmental geotechnics, landfill engineering, etc. Fitness for teaching includes licensure as a Professional Engineer within five years.
  • Research (40%): Conduct fundamental and applied research, write grant proposals, and disseminate findings. Establish and sustain an externally funded research program.
  • Service (20%): Participate in departmental, faculty, and university governance; engage in outreach and public dissemination of expertise. Report annual responsibilities to the Department Chair and Dean.
Qualifications

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in a related field (geotechnical, geoenvironmental, environmental, mining or water resources engineering) by the appointment start date and demonstrate a record or exceptional potential for excellence in research and education. Candidates should have a strong commitment to high-quality teaching, mentoring, and an externally funded research agenda. Evidence of scholarly achievement appropriate to career stage is required. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; Canadians and permanent residents will receive priority. Candidates from underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged.
