About the Team
The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Alberta is a leading institution with strong emphasis on interdisciplinary research and a dedication to societal impact. It provides world-class facilities such as the Geotechnical Centre, the Water Research Centre, and the Centre for Computational Geostatistics.
Cluster Vision
This cluster of five positions is designed to advance research at the interfaces of geotechnical, environmental, hydrological, and resource engineering. Projects include climate-resilient infrastructure, sustainable mining practices, drinking water quality, surface hydrology, and integrated earth systems analysis using advanced sensing, data science, AI/ML, and digital tools.
Position Description
A tenured or tenure-track faculty member (Assistant, Associate or Full Professor) in Geotechnical Engineering will lead research in soil mechanics, site investigation, and related areas. The successful candidate will collaborate across disciplines, develop high-impact research programs, and teach courses in at least two of the four disciplines (Geotechnical, Mining, Environmental, Water Resources). Practical experience in design or construction will be an asset.
Responsibilities
- Teaching (40%): Classroom teaching, supervision of graduate research, and advising students. Course content design, instruction methodology, and compliance with university policies are responsibilities. Licensure as a Professional Engineer is required for teaching design courses.
- Research (40%): Conduct and disseminate research, seek external funding, and pursue innovative interdisciplinary projects.
- Service (20%): Engage in departmental, faculty, and university governance; participate in service activities; and share expertise with the broader community.
Qualifications
Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Geotechnical, Geoenvironmental, Environmental, Mining, Water Resources, Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline. They should demonstrate an established record or exceptional potential for excellence in research and education, strong teaching and mentoring capability, and the ability to develop externally funded research programs.
