Where will you be working?

At M Group Energy, were enabling the energy essential to support our lives.

We provide an end-to-end service, delivering solutions in electricity transmission, distribution, renewable energy, EV, metering and home decarbonisation.

This role will be within our Transmission & Renewables team.

We design, build and commission substations at voltages up to and including 400k V.

Our teams construct and maintain transmission lines and substations, ensuring the efficient and reliable delivery of electricity.

What will you be doing?

We're looking for an experienced Lead Design Engineer with proven background in the Overhead Lines sector to join us at M Group Energy!

You'll be leading the OHL design projects ensuring they are delivered on time and within budget.

You'll be coordinating multidisciplinary design outputs across engineering, delivery, commercial, and planning teams.

This role will be hybrid to our Nottingham office where our design team are based.

  • Coordinate multidisciplinary design outputs across engineering, delivery, commercial, and planning teams.
  • Lead or support engagement with clients, consenting authorities, and external partners to secure approvals, resolve queries, and maintain strong technical communication.
  • Contribute to planning, scope definition, resource allocation, and risk identification within design workstreams.
  • Provide support to the Design Manager and Client in solving issues related to Overhead Lines, perform the calculations and assessment as required in software or by manual calculations.
  • To work within established Company policies and procedures.
  • Maintain excellent levels of communication throughout the team and the wider business.
  • Lead, develop, and review complex engineering designs, calculations, assessments, and technical documentation.
  • Provide authoritative technical guidance across the discipline, ensuring compliance with standards, regulations, and client requirements.
  • Approve design approaches, calculations, drawings, and technical outputs.
  • Identify and resolve complex design issues, propose innovative solutions, and challenge technical assumptions where required.
  • Ensure design work meets internal quality procedures, inspection requirements, technical assurance processes, and statutory obligations.
  • Conduct or oversee technical checks and reviews to ensure accuracy, safety, and constructability.
  • Support continuous improvement, standardisation, and best-practice adoption across the design function
  • Oversee or support site surveys, technical investigations, inspections, and field assessments to validate design assumptions.
  • Interpret ground, structural, environmental or asset condition data to inform solutions and mitigate project risk.
  • Provide specialised technical input during construction phases when required.
  • Mentor, support and develop engineers, graduates, apprentices, and technicians, promoting high technical standards and professional growth.
  • Provide constructive feedback, coaching, and guidance to support career progression and capability uplift across the team.
  • What youll bring
  • Have 8 years or more experience in OHL Design.
  • Have experience of leading OHL design projects -At least one project from detailed design to completion of construction and As-built submission.
  • Expert understanding of industry standard line design software PLS-CADD and TOWER and their interaction with OHL design standards.
  • Have clear knowledge of different types of overhead line towers, conductors, insulators and fittings.
  • Knowledge of various types of overhead line foundations.
  • In depth understanding and experience of delivering various design outputs for construction of overhead line.

Some of the examples include line design, clearance investigations, structural analysis, optioneering reports, line profiles, string drawings, schedules and sag tensions etc.

  • Have an up-to-date working knowledge of National Grid, SPEN, SSE, BSI, ENA and other relevant industry standards.
  • Chartered Engineer of IMech E/ICE/IStruct E or working towards chartership is desirable.
