As a Principal Product Safety Engineer, you will work within a Product Safety discipline, supporting Technical Authorities in ensuring systems are designed, assessed, and delivered with safety as a primary consideration. You will lead on hazard identification, risk assessment, and the development of robust safety cases across major subsystems and complex technologies.
You will be responsible for developing and maintaining structured safety arguments supported by appropriate assurance evidence, ensuring hazards are systematically identified and risks are reduced so far as is reasonably practicable (SFAIRP/ALARP). The role spans the full engineering lifecycle, from concept and design through to delivery and in-service support.
Key Responsibilities- Lead hazard identification (HAZID) and risk assessment activities across complex systems and subsystems
- Develop, maintain, and review hazard logs ensuring accuracy and maturity of safety data
- Produce and support safety cases, safety plans, and associated safety artefacts
- Work closely with Technical Authorities and engineering teams to develop and validate safety arguments
- Facilitate HAZID workshops, safety reviews, and risk assessment sessions
- Assess product safety across key technologies and lifecycle phases
- Review and assure safety submissions, ensuring technical quality and consistency
- Support the collation and assessment of safety evidence for safety case acceptance
- Strong understanding of product safety management processes and techniques
- Experience across multiple phases of the engineering or system lifecycle
- Knowledge of safety standards such as DEF STAN 00-56, Mil-Std-882E, JSP 430, BS EN 61508 or equivalent
- Experience producing technical safety documentation (hazard logs, safety cases, safety plans)
- Ability to lead or facilitate structured technical workshops (e.g. HAZID sessions)
- Strong technical writing and analytical skills
- Understanding of Safety Management Systems
- Experience in complex or software-intensive systems safety is advantageous
A degree in Engineering or a related STEM subject is required. Professional registration (IEng or CEng) is desirable, with support provided for those working towards chartership.
