Company Profile: A major international provider of services to the insurance sector. They are a leader in complex, high value construction / engineering adjusting and risk management, spanning heavy civil engineering and buildings. Their engineering and construction services division employs a team of engineers, lawyers, arbitrators and surveyors and has been trading for over fifty years.
Your Role: You will assess claims by inspecting sites, reviewing design drawings and contracts, and gathering written and photographic evidence, occasionally consulting external civil/structural forensic experts. You will consult with witnesses to understand the cause and extent of the damage, and, with the assistance of an in-house QS, estimate repair/compensation costs. You will work closely with representatives of the insured, and insurers, and go on to negotiate a fair settlement. You will develop working relationships with existing clients, and help to identify and plan approaches to new clients.
Training: The company regularly employs senior experts from industry; they provide training and support to gain the necessary adjusting / insurance knowledge. Should you decide you want to become a member of the Chartered Institution of Loss Adjusters, support and study leave is provided.
Profile Required: A chartered civil or structural engineer with experience working with a consultant, main contractor, or a large tier 2 contractor. A broad background is advantageous, especially if it spans heavy civil engineering and building projects. Strong communication skills are essential; there will be extensive contact with client representatives, insurers, brokers, contractors and consulting engineers, and frequent face-to-face negotiations to settle claims.
Career Prospects: This role is in a consistent, varied and profitable profession; it can progress to senior adjuster, on to directorship and divisional leadership. The skills you will acquire are in high demand, transferable, and command generous levels of compensation. The City of London's insurance industry employs many engineering and construction professionals. They are employed for their "real world" engineering and construction insight, often within risk engineering, underwriting, and adjusting; many go on to hold executive positions.
