Our client is seeking a Principal Highways Engineer to support infrastructure and highway projects on a contract basis. The role will involve providing technical leadership across highway design and development schemes, with particular responsibility for Section 278 and Section 38 agreements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leading the delivery of highway and infrastructure projects from design through to implementation
  • Managing and reviewing Section 278 and Section 38 highway agreements
  • Preparing and assessing highway designs, technical reports and supporting documentation
  • Providing expert highways advice to project teams, clients and external stakeholders
  • Co-ordinating with local authorities, developers, contractors and statutory bodies
  • Reviewing technical submissions to ensure compliance with relevant standards and approval requirements
  • Supporting project delivery through effective communication, technical problem-solving and stakeholder management

Job Requirements

  • Significant experience in highways engineering and infrastructure development
  • Strong knowledge of highway design principles, standards and industry best practice
  • Practical experience with Section 278 and Section 38 agreements
  • Ability to lead and review highway design and technical documentation
  • Understanding of highway approval processes and local authority requirements
  • Strong communication, organisation and project management skills
  • Ability to work effectively with clients, consultants, contractors and public-sector stakeholders
  • Relevant engineering qualification or equivalent professional experience
