Overview
As part of Enterprise Technology Services, you will own the technical integrity of regional data assets, modernize mainframe systems, and steer data architecture initiatives. You’ll collaborate with cross‑functional teams to ensure secure, highly available environments while transitioning to distributed, API‑driven solutions. This role offers impact across platforms, data governance, and enterprise data platforms, with a focus on scalable cloud-aligned architectures. You will help shape critical data strategies that support business growth with trust and efficiency.
Responsibilities
- Lead and mentor engineering teams to deliver high‑quality, documented work
- Ensure adherence to team standards and quality
- Handle data architecture and database management for assigned apps, including prototypes and APIs
- Transform logical to physical data designs per best practices
- Provide database administration for databases, data warehouses, and datamarts
- Debug and remediate design/performance defects in DB components
- Refactor database designs for reusability and efficiency
- Ensure high availability, backup, recovery, and performance optimization
- Develop plans, best practices, and standards for data management and security
- Act as senior member of an agile team and lead data assets per enterprise policies
- Balance 50% DB development/testing with collaboration on product/platform releases
- Collaborate with business and product teams to support changes and implement features
- Prioritize features with product teams for sprints based on trends and issues
- Partner with delivery architects to design data tier solutions aligned to platform goals
- Stay current on DBMS features and drive adoption across Amex
- Contribute to vendor product strategies and opportunities
- Advocate for innovative technologies and continuous improvement
- Engage with product owners on blueprints and annual feature planning
- Communicate and align with cross‑functional partners through the release cycle
Key requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field
- 5+ years of mainframe development experience (COBOL, JCL, CICS, DB2)
- Proven track record of maintaining and enhancing mission-critical systems
- Ability to analyze complex legacy apps and identify modernization opportunities
- Excellent problem-solving, debugging, and communication skills
- Growth mindset toward distributed systems and cloud tech
