About The Role PRINCIPAL TEMPORARY WORKS DESIGN ENGINEER – Permanent Opportunity DIVISION: Civil Engineering LOCATION: Manchester Benefits: Car Allowance; Subsidised Private Medical Cover; Life Assurance Scheme, Contributory Pension, 35 Days annual leave (Including Public Holidays) The successful candidate will contribute to the delivery of civil, structural, and geotechnical temporary works designs across the GRAHAM business. Responsibilities include providing technical support, ensuring solutions are safe, buildable, and compliant with GRAHAM policies and procedures. Our team comprises experienced engineers and technicians with expertise in civil, structural, and geotechnical disciplines. We also offer services such as 3D CAD, Navisworks, 3D Laser Scanning, BIM Visualization, and Vehicle Swept Path Analysis. A Temporary Works Design Engineer must manage their workload efficiently, maintain their CPD, and support staff development within GRAHAM. Building relationships with peers is essential for knowledge transfer. Typical duties include: Managing temporary works design and checks during tender and construction phases for projects in the UK and Ireland, covering above and below ground works. Preparing safe, buildable, and efficient temporary works designs in line with relevant codes. Producing calculations, drawings (using CAD), and risk assessments under tight deadlines. Calculations may involve steel, concrete, timber, piling, crane platforms, hoarding, formwork, scaffolding, slope stability, and ground support systems. Ensuring design quality and compliance with procedures. Establishing design briefs through consultation and considering site loads. Advising on temporary conditions affecting permanent works design. Independent checking of designs for adequacy and compliance. Reviewing and certifying designs by others/sub-contractors. Ensuring CDM compliance. Providing timely advice to construction teams and adapting to site changes. Supporting estimating teams with costs, programmes, and sequencing. Providing information for procurement. Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. Guiding less experienced engineers and site staff. Inspecting temporary works on site and resolving buildability issues. Introducing improvements and innovations. Working collaboratively, prioritizing tasks, and adapting to changes. Participating in team meetings and development initiatives.
