The American Chemical Society (ACS) is the world's largest scientific membership association, with a mission to "advance the broader chemistry enterprise and its practitioners for the benefit of Earth and its people". ACS Publications is a Division of the ACS responsible for publishing journals and related services that support the chemical enterprise.
As a Cloud Architect at ACS, a leading source of scientific information, you will be instrumental in implementing and managing cloud solutions. This role requires a deep understanding of cloud services, especially in AWS, with GCP experience being a substantial advantage. Your expertise will drive the development and management of our cloud-based infrastructure, ensuring seamless integration and efficient operation across our publications, conferences, and related services.
Responsibilities
- Minimum 10+ years of application development/solution architecture experience required for this position.
- Design, implement, and manage cloud solutions in AWS, with GCP experience as an added advantage.
- Take ownership of provisioning of Cloud services and products. Develop and manage infrastructure automation focusing on scalability and security.
- Collaborate with software and AI engineer teams to meet project acceptance criteria, document requirements, support continuous integration and delivery, and mentor junior staff in cloud technologies and best practices.
- Experience with design, development, and management of dev, test, and production environments, ensuring robust software configuration management throughout the application development lifecycle.
- Extensive understanding of cloud-agnostic architectures using Kubernetes and related solutions.
- Extensive experience implementing AWS EKS clusters, managing and scaling clusters with knowledge of VPC/subnet configurations and gateways. Linux experience is a plus.
- Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines, ensuring smooth deployments using GitHub Actions, ArgoCD, and containerization strategies.
- Manage Kubernetes clusters within cloud environments, optimizing for performance and reliability.
- Utilize Terraform and other Infrastructure as Code tools to automate cloud infrastructure.
- Work with serverless computing frameworks on AWS to enhance scalability and efficiency.
- Define efficient operating models for publication assets through Org Units and IAM roles.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams in an Agile setting to provide architecture support on AWS.
- Integrate and help manage legacy workflows using ArgoCD, Airflow, Jenkins, Bitbucket, and Bamboo pipelines.
- Act as a tech owner of independent software products and align with stakeholders.
- Present cloud solutions and architectures to technical and business stakeholders.
- Take ownership of cloud design and infrastructure operations.
- Learn and apply new cloud and AI technologies to advise and architect modern solutions.
- Mentor cloud engineers and build a capable Cloud Operations team.
- Assist and manage the roadmap for DevOps in established operations, including continuous delivery and enterprise DevOps toolsets.
- Support DevSecOps practices, including secret management, privilege management, and tool integrations to enhance baseline security.
- AWS Solutions Architect Professional and Kubernetes certifications are a plus.
Location
This role can be based in one of the following offices: Washington, D.C.; Columbus, OH; or Oxford, UK. A competitive compensation range is listed for each location.
- DC Based: between $130,000-$160,000 per year.
- OH Based: between $115,000-$140,000 per year.
- UK: between £74,000- £100,000 per year.
