The Marine Training Product Manager is responsible for translating industry and client needs into effective, revenue-generating training programs for the designated business segment (marine, offshore, energy, etc.). This role combines deep technical and operational expertise with learning design capabilities to identify training needs, architect learning solutions, and oversee program financial performance and client satisfaction across the product lifecycle.
What You Will Do
- Industry & Client Needs Analysis
- Conduct ongoing industry training needs analysis within the assigned business segment, gathering market intelligence on regulatory, standards, and technology trends influencing industry upskilling requirements.
- Lead discovery and scoping sessions with key clients to understand competency gaps, performance challenges, and training requirements.
- Participate in client discussions, industry events and working groups (IMO, IACS, OPITO) to gather insights and build relationships with stakeholders.
- Translate market and client insights into well-defined training requirements and opportunity assessments (including estimated demand, target audience, and potential revenue).
- Learning Program Architecture & Design
- Design end-to-end learning solutions (programs, curricula, and individual courses) that address identified needs and align with business objectives.
- Develop detailed program and course design documents (design blueprints, learning paths, storyboards, high-level content outlines, assessment strategies) that can be efficiently executed by the development team.
- Define learning objectives, target learner profiles, modalities (classroom, virtual, eLearning, blended, microlearning), and assessment strategies for each program.
- Ensure designs comply with relevant industry standards, regulations, and best practices in adult learning and instructional design.
- Collaborate with the build team (instructional designers, developers, and multimedia specialists) to ensure design intent is implemented according to design and meets target release timelines.
- Product Ownership & Revenue Management
- Serve as the product owner for assigned training programs once launched, overseeing their financial performance and lifecycle.
- Monitor revenue, enrollment, utilization, and profitability of assigned programs; recommend pricing strategies and portfolio adjustments as needed.
- Support sales, marketing, and regional teams in positioning and promoting training products (providing product briefs, value propositions, and client-facing messaging).
- Partner with commercial teams to respond to key client proposals, including customizing or bundling offerings to meet client requirements.
- Subject Matter Expertise & SME Coordination
- Act as an internal subject matter expert (SME) for the assigned market area, ensuring training content reflects current industry practice, standards, and technology.
- Contribute technical and operational expertise during content development, reviews, and quality assurance.
- Identify, engage, and coordinate internal and external SMEs (technical experts, regulators, industry practitioners) to support content development and delivery.
- Support recruitment, onboarding, and ongoing development of instructors, facilitators, and technical SMEs.
- Program Evaluation, Quality, and Continuous Improvement
- Define KPIs and evaluation plans for training programs, including learner feedback, assessment results, on-the-job performance indicators, and client satisfaction.
- Regularly review program effectiveness, learner outcomes, and client feedback to recommend improvements in content, structure, modality, and delivery.
- Ensure timely updates to programs to reflect regulatory changes, new industry standards, and emerging technologies or practices.
- Collaborate with operations and delivery teams to address delivery challenges and enhance the learner experience.
What You Will Need
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant technical or operational discipline (Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, Offshore Engineering, Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, Safety/Environmental Engineering, Human Resource Development, or equivalent, depending on market).
- Master’s degree in a related field (technical, operational, education, or instructional design) is preferred.
- 5+ years of technical and operational experience within the relevant market (marine, offshore, energy, government/regulatory, defense, or related).
- 5+ years of experience in learning design, instructional design, or training program development (corporate, professional, or higher education).
- Demonstrated experience conducting client or stakeholder needs assessments and translating them into structured training or capability-building solutions.
- Experience working with cross-functional teams (commercial, product, technical, and L&D teams) in a matrixed or global environment.
- Must have authorization to work in the country of employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong understanding of adult learning principles, instructional design methodologies, and learning evaluation models (ADDIE, Kirkpatrick).
- Deep familiarity with regulatory frameworks, industry standards, and operational practices within the assigned business segment.
- Ability to develop clear, comprehensive design documentation and requirements that enable efficient development.
- Commercial acumen, with the ability to analyze program performance, understand pricing and margins, and identify growth opportunities.
- Excellent communication and facilitation skills, with the ability to engage confidently with clients, industry partners, and internal stakeholders.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities; able to synthesize complex technical information into coherent learning solutions.
- High level of organization and project management capability, with the ability to manage multiple programs and stakeholders simultaneously.
- Working knowledge of ABS Health, Safety, Quality Management System.
It Would Be Nice If You Had
- Additional certifications in instructional design, adult learning, or training & development (CPLP/ CPTD, instructional design certificates) are an asset.
- Experience managing or supporting revenue-generating training products or services is strongly preferred.
