Position Overview:
We are seeking a motivated and qualified Operations and Maintenance Engineer with a specialisation in Electric Vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure to join our growing team. Based in Bristol and working in a hybrid capacity, you’ll be responsible for overseeing contractors carrying out installation, testing, commissioning, maintenance and repair of EV charging equipment across commercial and public sites. You will also be required to visit sites and carry out fault finding exercises when needed. Any other experience in Solar PV, EV Charging Infrastructure, BESS, CHPs, Ground and Air Source Heat Pumps, Building Management Systems or Gas boiler systems will be beneficial.
This is an office-based role and the engineering skills and qualifications are for understanding only; this role is for the right candidate who wants to get “off the tools” and will be expected to have good IT literacy skills and be able to present technical expertise to project teams and leadership.
You will play a key role in supporting the UK’s transition to cleaner transportation by ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of our EV charging network. Bristol City Leap is a world first, game-changing approach towards decarbonisation at city-scale. We are a twenty-year joint venture partnership between Bristol City Council, Ameresco and Vattenfall Heat UK which will enable the delivery of over £1 billion of investment into Bristol’s energy system.
Key Responsibilities
- Contract manage installations, commissioning, maintenance, and repairs on EV charge points (AC+DC).
- Instruct electrical testing and fault diagnosis in accordance with BS 7671 and IET Code of Practice for EV charging installations.
- Schedule preventative maintenance and emergency reactive maintenance.
- Write key technical processes or procedures for either live projects or O&M manuals.
- Maintain accurate service records and issue required documentation (EIC, EICR, MEIWC, etc.).
- Provide remote technical support and troubleshooting when working from home or off-site.
- Liaise with project managers, clients, and manufacturers to deliver and support installations.
- Ensure all work complies with current UK regulations and company health and safety procedures.
- Adhere to and, as required, support the development and improvement of a range of operational processes and procedures.
Essential Qualifications & Certifications (UK)
To meet the legal and safety requirements for EV charger installation and maintenance, candidates must hold the following:
Core Electrical Qualifications:
- NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Electrotechnical Services (Electrical Installation) or equivalent.
- AM2 Assessment (Achievement Measurement 2).
- 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS 7671:2018 + A2:2022). As a minimum.
- Level 3 Award in Initial and Periodic Inspection and Testing of Electrical Installations (2391-52) or equivalent (e.g., 2394/2395).
EV-Specific Training & Certification:
- City & Guilds 2919-01 (Level 3 Award in Domestic, Commercial and Industrial Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment Installation) or
- EAL Level 3 Award in the Requirements for the Installation of Electric Vehicle Charging Points.
Additional Requirements:
- Full UK Driving Licence (Essential).
- ECS Gold Card (Preferred).
Skills & Experience
- 2+ years of experience in electrical installation and maintenance, ideally in EV or renewable sectors.
- Strong fault-finding, testing, and documentation skills.
- Excellent communicator - must be a fluent English speaker, especially technically.
- Familiarity with EV hardware from manufacturers such as Alfen, Rolec, Schneider, EO and Kempower.
- Good understanding of networked systems (Wi-Fi, SIM-based comms, OCPP protocol).
- Excellent time management and self-motivation working remotely or on-site.
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Good IT literacy.
