Role and Scope
Our projects divisions cover all aspects of delivery of energy projects for the public sector, industrial and commercial clients. The Solar Design Engineer will work within the team to formulate, evaluate and prepare technical analysis and specification of public sector, industrial and commercial schemes during feasibility studies, scheme design and project implementation. The Solar Design Engineer will assist in the trial and development of new products and technology. The Solar Design Engineer will have a good level of technical expertise, have a sound track record, and the role will involve complex technical duties and business support activities. The Solar Design Engineer will be required to work on a variety of projects at any one time depending on the size and scope of the work.
Typically, the Solar Design Engineer will:
- Support the planning, development, procurement and implementation of a variety of projects.
- Ensure project scope, goals and deliverables are accurately specified, budgeted and planned to meet the objectives of the clients' "Project Brief".
- Assist in finalisation of project design, equipment selection and layout.
- Provide technical support to the project implementation team throughout the implementation period.
- Attend HAZOP and technical review meetings as required.
- Attend site to review commissioning and performance trials.
- Define project tasks and resource requirements.
- Develop full scale project plans.
- Assemble and coordinate project resources.
- Assist planning and scheduling project timelines.
- Ensure compliance with Health and Safety Regulations.
- Conduct quality assurance.
- Perform project evaluations and assessment of results.
- Continually review new and existing technical developments to ensure sustainability for clients' developments.
- Review Contractor's activities in line with project requirements and company procedures.
- Coach and support the operational side of engineering prior, during and after project implementation.
- Ensure projects meet the requirements not only of the Client but also any relevant regulative bodies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Public Sector Project Development
From time to time the Solar Design Engineer will be required to work with the Sales Development team and assist in the end-to-end completion of high quality proposals, quotations, bids and tender responses, which are both technically and commercially compliant with the client’s specifications.
- Timely preparation of detailed engineering proposals.
- Accurately interpret client’s technical specification and assist in the production of a compliant technical proposal; offering more suitable alternatives where appropriate.
- Accurately interpret client’s commercial requirements and ensure any commercial or contractual risks to the company are identified and mitigated.
- Ensure proposals pricing and estimating is in line with company’s agreed strategies on sales and marketing, charge out rates and availability of engineering resource.
- Take part in ‘bid review’, ‘bid clarification’ and ‘sales handover’ meetings.
- Write high quality technical documents and reports and present them to both internal and external audiences.
- Liaise with internal stakeholders to assist in collating accurate data for the preparation of proposals.
- Maintain a sales and marketing focus in all proposals related activity and in contacts with stakeholders.
- On a needs basis, provide resilience support to other departments within the company.
The Ideal Candidate Will Possess
- Strong Engineering experience, gained from within a design or engineering projects environment.
- Relevant engineering qualifications and/or degree in relevant field, or currently studying for relevant qualification (Electrical engineering background or engineers with electrical works experience preferred).
- Strong knowledge and working experience of National standards such as BS th Edition, IET Code of Practice, MCS standards and other relevant regulations.
- Good knowledge on working on Excel or relevant PV software for yield and self-consumption analysis.
- Demonstrable design experience using relevant PV software (PVSyst, PVCase, Autocad etc).
- Strong knowledge about Solar PV components such as PV modules, inverters, mounting system, cables, containment.
- Experience at designing different configurations i.e. string vs optimizers, string vs central, rooftop, ground mount, carport.
- Enthusiasm to follow trends in technological updates and apply to ongoing projects.
- Experience gained from public sector, pharmaceutical, health or chemical based sectors or projects.
- Detailed understanding of engineering issues and processes.
- Proven experience of working in CDM type projects.
- Proven experience in strategic planning.
- Proven experience in risk management.
- Proven experience in change management.
- The ability to think analytically, with the ability to critically assess requirements and select "best fit" approach to meeting company and client objectives.
- Ability to influence and collaborate at all levels in order to achieve engineering targets and represent the company in a professional and highly competent manner.
- IT literate with demonstrable Microsoft Office skills, including Word, Excel/spreadsheets, Power point, Outlook, Auto CAD and MS Projects.
- Full UK driving licence.

They should be able to demonstrate good organisational skills including the ability to multi-task, prioritise work under pressure and complete within deadlines. The job requires the ability to work well as part of a team but also independently using their own initiative where appropriate.
