Tug Chief Engineer

Amentum, a global leader in advanced engineering, technical, and professional services serving the US government, allies, and critical infrastructure sectors, is seeking an experienced Tug Chief Engineer to support a unique US Navy program on the island of Diego Garcia. The Tug Chief Engineer will oversee the operation, maintenance, and repair of systems aboard the tug vessel, ensuring safe, efficient, and effective operations. This role is critical to maintaining the operational readiness and reliability of the tug for all required maritime services.

Job Responsibilities:

• Oversee and manage all engineering operations aboard the tug, including the operation, maintenance, and repair of the main and auxiliary engines, propulsion systems, generators, electrical systems, hydraulics, and HVAC systems.
• Supervise the engineering crew and assign daily tasks to ensure the efficient and safe functioning of all onboard machinery and systems.
• Prepare, implement, and monitor preventive and scheduled maintenance programs to ensure all tug systems and equipment remain operational within regulatory compliance and performance parameters.
• Perform inspections of the tug's engineering spaces to ensure safety, cleanliness, and proper functioning of all equipment.
• Monitor vital parameters such as fuel levels, oil levels, operating temperatures, and pressures of engines and auxiliary equipment, ensuring optimal performance and proactive maintenance.
• Troubleshoot and resolve any mechanical or electrical issues related to the tug's equipment or machinery, ensuring minimal operational downtime.
• Maintain accurate and detailed engineering logs, maintenance records, and defect reports in compliance with regulatory and company policies.
• Ensure that all work on the tug complies with international, flag-state, and military regulations, including safety, environmental, and pollution prevention standards.
• Collaborate with the vessel’s Captain and deck team to ensure full alignment and coordination between engineering and navigational operations.
• Manage inventory levels and requisitions for spare parts, tools, and supplies required for the maintenance and repair of the vessel.
• Report to management on the operational readiness and maintenance status of the tug, identifying potential risks or areas for improvement.
• Lead response and troubleshooting efforts during emergencies, including propulsion or power failures, fire incidents, flooding, or hazardous material situations.
• Supervise the refueling and bunkering of the tug, ensuring proper procedures are followed and no environmental hazards occur.
• Mentor and train junior engineering staff on proper procedures, safety protocols, and best operational practices.

Minimum Requirements:

• Experience: 5–7 years of engineering experience, with at least 2–3 years as a Chief Engineer or in a similar leadership role aboard tugs or other maritime vessels.
• Education: High school diploma or equivalent. An advanced technical or vocational degree or specialized certifications in Marine Engineering is highly desirable.
• Licenses and Certifications: Valid Chief Engineer license for at least 500 gross tons in accordance with STCW (Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers) requirements. Valid certifications in Basic Safety Training (BST), Advanced Firefighting, and relevant endorsements for tug operations.
• Skills and Technical Knowledge: Proficiency in troubleshooting, repair, and operation of marine propulsion systems, generators, electrical systems, and auxiliary equipment. Solid understanding of international and flag-state regulations related to maritime engineering, vessel safety, and pollution control. Proficiency in reading technical diagrams, engineering blueprints, schematics, and maintenance manuals. Strong leadership and teamwork skills with the ability to motivate, mentor, and direct engineering crew performance. Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage inventories, maintenance schedules, and emergency situations.
• Other: Must be in possession of a valid passport and be able to travel internationally. Passport should be valid for a minimum of one (1) year or more at the time of hiring. Ability to successfully pass contract medical requirements and maintain medical and fitness standards for the duration of deployment.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Prior experience in an austere OCONUS (Outside the Continental United States) environment.
• Valid country driver’s license and international passport.
• Familiarity with U.S. Navy operations and regulations, particularly those related to military and civilian contractor-operated vessels.
• Advanced maritime certifications for hazardous materials handling or high voltage systems.
• Experience with government or military logistics and vessel operations.
• Knowledge of mechanical and electrical diagnostic tools, including engine analyzers and vibration analysis systems.
• Proven ability to manage engineering operations under strict deadlines and resource constraints.
