About the Opportunity Amentum is offering an opportunity to join our team of professionals, working on a range of projects across the Defence sector. We are seeking proactive and collaborative Marine Systems Engineers at all levels to support the delivery of high‑quality services to our clients. You will play a key role in shaping complex Defence platforms from concept through design and delivery, ensuring robust and coherent solutions that underpin mission‑critical capabilities. We have a network of base offices to work from in a hybrid model.

Key Responsibilities

  • Elicit, analyse, and manage stakeholder and system requirements, ensuring traceability across the lifecycle.
  • Develop system architectures and design artefacts, including functional, logical, and physical views.
  • Support decomposition of requirements from system to subsystem and component levels.
  • Collaborate with architects, developers, and integration teams to ensure coherent and feasible system designs.
  • Support verification and validation planning, ensuring requirements are testable and aligned to acceptance criteria.
  • Contribute to documentation and governance artefacts in line with MOD and industry standards.
  • Examine key design drivers, standards and requirements.

Here’s What You’ll Need

  • Degree qualification in Marine Engineering (or related subject such as Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering etc.) at either Bachelor’s or Master’s level.
  • Be a Chartered Engineer, Incorporated Engineer, or show evidence of ongoing CPD towards Chartered status.
  • Proven ability to solve complex marine systems engineering problems, including trade‑off analysis and design trade studies.
  • Experience in marine or naval systems engineering, ideally on warship or submarine design studies (especially surface combatants).
  • Experience of working on naval ship studies and design activity during ship acquisition, translating customer ideas and capability requirements into design solutions and exploiting Defence Standards.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within multi‑disciplinary teams and obtain a security clearance.

Experience

  • Proven experience as a Marine Systems Engineer within Defence or complex system environments with a strong understanding of marine systems engineering principles and lifecycle models (e.g. V‑model, Agile, hybrid approaches).
  • Experience of working with stakeholders to determine their needs and generating the highest level of system requirements, based on the users’ needs and other constraints.
  • Ability, experience and proof of producing high quality, well‑structured and logically written reports within tight timescales that clearly communicate an understanding of the task, the work carried out, conclusions and recommendations made to the sponsor.
