We are looking for a motivated Junior Geophysicist with at least two years of professional experience to join our Subsurface Solutions team within the Earth and Environmental Operations Area. You will bridge the gap between complex data collection and practical engineering solutions, supporting environmental, defence and energy projects. This is a hybrid role involving hands‑on field data acquisition, advanced processing, and technical reporting.
You will be working within a multidisciplinary team with specialities in low strength sedimentary rock, high strength rock and Quaternary geology, and in disciplines ranging from hydrogeology, land quality, geotechnical engineering, engineering geology and geoscience related safety case work. Much of the work we undertake involves siting, site characterisation, site descriptive models and understanding subsurface conditions and hazards. In addition, you will be encouraged to work with the wider Amentum community to further strengthen the team’s capabilities. You will also gain experience in complex bid preparation, project management and technical planning.
As a result, we are looking for people who have the passion and drive to be involved with major projects with strong adaptability, prioritisation and teamworking skills. While much of our work is focussed on exciting projects that form part of Amentum’s Energy, Environment and Defence businesses, we would be interested in candidates with experience in carbon capture and storage (CCS) and geothermal energy, which could complement future growth opportunities.
What You’ll Do- Field Data Acquisition: Lead and support geophysical surveys using in-house survey equipment such as ERI, GPR, EM and HVSR.
- Site Investigation: Assist in the design of survey programmes to identify subsurface risks like voids, utilities, or varying bedrock depth and integrate findings with geotechnical and geoenvironmental teams planning intrusive investigations.
- Support the design of third‑party onshore surveys such as MASW, 2D reflection and refraction, wireline and cross‑hole seismic, providing field supervision.
- Support the design of third‑party near‑shore marine surveys such as SBP, Magnetometer, 2D reflection and refraction, providing field supervision (offshore certification and training provided).
- Data Processing and interpretation: Utilise industry‑standard software (e.g. Res2DInv, Geolitix) to process raw field data into actionable models.
- Assist with the interpretation of 2D and 3D seismic datasets (IHS Kingdom).
- Conduct structural analysis and fault mapping using geophysical, borehole, and field data and integrate with other datasets to support subsurface evaluations.
- Develop an understanding of the underlying requirements of our clients, and how we can meet those requirements.
- Reporting: Technical writing of factual and interpretive reports, ensuring high‑quality visualisations and clear recommendations.
- Safety & Logistics: Manage field equipment maintenance and uphold strict Health & Safety standards on‑site.
- Education: A degree in Geophysics, Geology, or Civil Engineering (MSc preferred).
- Experience: 2+ years in a commercial engineering or environmental geophysics environment.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in GIS (ArcGIS/QGIS) and geophysical processing software.
- Field Readiness: Willingness to travel to remote sites across the UK and overseas when required, and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Licensing: A full, clean driving licence is essential.
- Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including tailoring outputs to the requirements of different stakeholders.
- Time Management: Ability to manage time and priorities while working on several varied projects.
- Autonomous problem‑solving: Ability to autonomously develop critically thought‑out solutions and bring work scopes to the team, including the ability to show/communicate critical thinking in assessing other solutions.
