About IA&R: The Independent Assurance & Regulation (IA&R) team has a primary focus on three key areas; Independent Oversight & Assurance, Technology Development, and Regulatory Support. We have been directly involved in the Royal Navy’s Nuclear Submarine Program for six decades, as well as supporting the UK Civil Nuclear & Decommissioning industry.
To support the growth of the IA&R business, we are seeking a skilled and experienced Nuclear Engineer to be based in our Bristol Office. As a Nuclear Engineer, you will be working within an established yet growing team supporting the Ministry of Defence (MOD) Submarine Delivery Group (SDG) Nuclear Propulsion team in the UK Nuclear Submarine Programme. This includes the provision of safety and project advice for the future Naval Reactor Plant (NRP), which involves working with a wide range of technical disciplines to provide balanced, proportionate and timely support. This work requires a general knowledge of the design and operation of the NRP, safety case development and methodologies, and the ability to communicate effectively.
This role is ideal for a confident and ambitious engineer, several years into their career or a seasoned veteran. This role would also suit a former RN Cat A Watchkeeper looking for an opportunity to apply their knowledge of the naval reactor plant. We are seeking individuals across a variety of different grade profiles, dependent on experience level. Flexibility is key to the role, and you will have the opportunity to apply your skills in a variety of submarine related applications.
Role responsibilities:
- Provide authoritative advice and support to MOD on the management, production, control and approval of the naval nuclear safety case and engineering documentation.
- Advise on safety case expectations and requirements for safety campaigns with internal stakeholders and external supply chain partners.
- Represent the team in internal and external meetings.
- Lead in relevant safety and technical areas, providing technical advice to MOD.
- Represent the team in internal and external project, technical and safety meetings.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- Previous experience within the naval nuclear propulsion programme and detailed knowledge of the naval reactor plant.
- Working knowledge of nuclear safety case structure, production and approval.
- Degree (Level 6, minimum requirement) in science or engineering (or equivalent).
- Membership of (or working towards) a chartership by a professional institution is desirable.
- This role will require security clearance; therefore, applicants should hold or be able to obtain security clearance in the UK.
- Ability to regularly attend meetings in Bristol and Derby when required.
