Amentum is seeking a Technical Director – Ports and Maritime Engineering to join our UK team, supporting the delivery of critical infrastructure within the Defence sector. This role offers a flexible hybrid working model, combining office-based, remote, and occasional UK site work. You will play a key role in providing strategic and technical leadership for our Ports and Maritime capability, supporting the delivery of complex, multidisciplinary engineering solutions across civil, structural, geotechnical, seismic, and maritime disciplines.

As a senior member of the team, you will help shape technical direction and contribute to the development of engineering strategy, working closely with colleagues across the business. You will also support the continued growth and positioning of the capability across the UK and wider organisation, fostering collaboration and sharing expertise to deliver high-quality outcomes. You will act as a trusted advisor to clients and stakeholders, building strong relationships and helping to inform decision-making at senior levels to support the successful delivery of major programmes.

You’ll work with and support teams to deliver high-quality outcomes, helping to foster technical excellence, innovation, and the sharing of best practice. You will also mentor engineers and emerging leaders, supporting their development and helping to build capability across the team. You’ll play an important part in shaping technical governance and assurance, supporting the delivery of work that aligns with standards, client needs, and industry best practice. With a pragmatic, solutions-focused and commercially aware approach, you’ll contribute to solving complex engineering challenges while supporting projects to be delivered safely, efficiently, and to a high standard.

You will play an important role in the successful delivery of projects and programmes, helping to coordinate scope, schedule, budget, and resources. Working closely with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders, you’ll support the development of integrated, efficient, and value-driven solutions that meet both client and project needs.

Fundamental Requirements

  • A Chartered Engineer (ICE or IStructE), with extensive experience and a recognised authority in the application of core engineering principles at a strategic and technical leadership level.
  • Significant experience in civil and structural design, with expertise in the application of British Standards and Eurocodes and their implementation across complex programmes.
  • Strong experience in ports, maritime, or related heavy civil engineering sectors, with a proven ability to lead and deliver solutions to highly complex, high-value, and high-risk engineering challenges.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to contribute technical insight and guidance in complex and evolving environments.
  • Good commercial awareness, with an understanding of client needs, business priorities, and the wider project and programme context.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to build relationships and work effectively with colleagues and stakeholders, including at senior levels.
  • Experience contributing to or leading technical delivery on major projects or programmes, supporting positive outcomes across scope, schedule, budget, and risk.
  • A proactive and collaborative approach, with the ability to support team performance, manage changing priorities, and work effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
  • A strong commitment to health, safety, and quality, with an interest in continuous improvement and supporting the development of others and wider team capability.

Desirable

  • Familiarity with industry guidance for maritime infrastructure and load application, such as PIANC and OCIMF.
  • An understanding of structural dynamics and its application in complex marine and infrastructure projects.
  • Experience in leading digital engineering and Information Management strategies within major project environments.
  • Significant experience in the use, development, or governance of advanced finite element structural analysis tools, such as STAAD.Pro or SAP2000.
  • Significant understanding of geotechnical engineering principles, with experience guiding the application of software such as WALLAP and PLAXIS.
  • Knowledge of NEC3/4 ECC contracts, with experience operating at a senior level within project and programme delivery environments.
