Amentum, a global leader in advanced engineering, technical, and professional services serving the US government, allies and critical infrastructure sectors, is seeking a NGIS Warehouse Specialist to support a unique US Navy program based on the island of Diego Garcia.
The Deckhand is responsible for assisting sea vessel operations transporting crew members, passengers and freight.
Principal AccountabilitiesTypical duties include the following, although specific duties vary by assignment or contract:
- Assists in standing lookout watch in traffic areas under all weather and sea conditions
- Assists in the daily inspection of the operating condition of all emergency equipment
- Attends to passenger needs and performs cleanup and maintenance duties
- Provides good customer service to the travelling public
- Participates in periodic all hands drills and emergency exercises
- Operates safety gates and loading ramps, and maintains security about the decks
- Reads all gauges and fluid levels in engine room and reports any problems to the captain
- Reports all observations, actions and/or matters affecting the stability, operational capacity, safety and welfare of the vessel, crew, passengers, vehicles and other public properties to the captain or first deckhand
- Handles lines, tie up barges in fleets or to docks
- Make and break tow using all necessary equipment
- Ensures applicable industry safety standards, guidelines and specification codes are observed
- Conducts onboard maintenance, repairs, and regular onboard inspections to include machinery and equipment
- Maintains and ensures the quality control of the motor vesselβs Preventive Maintenance System
- Conducts on-site surveys of vessel equipment to determine maintenance and repair needs
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned

- Working knowledge of methods and procedures used in the maintenance and repair of marine equipment, machinery, facilities and boats
- High School education or equivalent preferred
- Additional experience/education may be required by contract or assignment
The employee must meet physical requirements including but not limited to, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing up/down ladders and stairs, negotiating uneven and moving surfaces. Must be physically fit enough to pull heavy lines/hoses, lift, carry heavy items, climb onto barges and up and down ladders. Must be able to work in difficult conditions with exposure to warm and wet weather conditions. Must be comfortable working aboard boats and barges using heavy lines, winches, and mechanical tools for repairs. Ability to lift up to 75 pounds. Living and working conditions at the assignment location could be remote and uncomfortable. Long hours, exposure to weather and hazardous conditions. Personnel should be aware of moving on short notice and under adverse conditions.
