Amentum are part of a 10-year control systems framework for designing, manufacturing, and installing control systems to aid decommissioning and operational efficiency. The project comprises more than 200 nuclear facilities and more than 1,000 buildings in Cumbria. We are a key supplier and are looking for people to join our team. You will be working on a multi-million-pound contract to manage system design, programme, test and assembly. The framework supports the site’s high-hazard risk reduction programme. We have existing teams out of Birchwood Park, Warrington, Cumbria and Newcastle North East, where we can manage hybrid working, with occasional site visits.

We’re looking for a Control Systems Engineer with solid PLC experience who wants to move beyond routine work and take ownership of real engineering challenges. This is a mid-level role (typically 3–7 years’ experience), ideal for someone ready to step up, broaden their technical exposure across multiple platforms and progress toward a Senior Engineer position. You’ll work across the full project lifecycle, from design through to commissioning, on complex, safety-critical systems.

Key Highlights

  • Work on complex, safety-critical systems – not repetitive maintenance work
  • Gain hands-on experience across multiple PLC platforms, not siloed into one vendor
  • Be involved end-to-end – from initial design through to live commissioning
  • Clear and supported progression path to Senior Engineer
  • Learn from experienced engineers in a technically strong team

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Design and develop PLC software using platforms such as Rockwell (Studio 5000), Siemens (TIA Portal), Schneider (EcoStruxure)
  • Develop and configure HMI/SCADA systems – Rockwell FactoryTalk View (ME/SE), Schneider AVEVA/Citect/Vijeo Designer, Siemens WinCC/Flex, Intouch Wonderware or similar
  • Support full project delivery: concept and detailed design, system build, development and integration
  • Testing – Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Customer Acceptance Testing (CAT)
  • Support site installation, site acceptance testing (SAT) and commissioning
  • Contribute to system validation, testing and troubleshooting activities
  • Produce high-quality technical documentation – design specs, test docs, user manuals
  • Work closely with multidisciplinary teams (electrical, mechanical, project delivery)

Qualifications

  • Degree or HND in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Experience with PLC or SCADA programming in industrial environments
  • Familiarity with IEC 61131 programming languages
  • Experience supporting testing, commissioning or system integration
  • Strong problem‑solving and fault‑finding skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively within project teams

Desirable

  • Experience with Rockwell, Siemens or Schneider PLC platforms
  • Experience with SCADA/HMI systems
  • Background in regulated industries (e.g., nuclear, oil & gas, pharma)
  • Interest in developing multi-platform expertise

Additional Information

  • Hybrid working – 2–3 days per week in the office, depending on project needs
  • Flexible working hours to support work-life balance
  • UK travel required at key project stages (site visits, commissioning)
  • Security clearance: BPSS required (SC eligible)
  • Role available on a permanent or contract basis

Benefits

  • Competitive package and benefits, including free single medical cover and digital GP service
  • Family-friendly benefits – enhanced parental leave pay and free membership of employee assistance and parental programmes
  • Reimbursement towards relevant professional development and memberships
  • Give back to our communities via matched-funding, paid volunteering time and charitable donations

If you’re looking to step into a role where you can take real ownership, work on high-impact engineering projects, and accelerate your progression toward Senior Engineer level, we’d like to hear from you.
