About the Opportunity: We are seeking an experienced and safety-driven Civil Supervisor to oversee daily groundworks, infrastructure, and structural civil activities on site. The successful candidate will lead direct operatives and subcontractors, ensuring that all works are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and to the highest quality specifications. You will bridge the gap between engineering designs and physical execution, acting as the primary point of contact for frontline operations.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
- Site Supervision & Leadership: Lead and coordinate daily on-site activities for civil operatives, trades, and subcontractors. Delegate clear tasks and monitor workflows to meet project timelines.
- Health, Safety & Environment (HSE): Enforce strict compliance with UK Health & Safety legislation and CDM regulations. Deliver site inductions, conduct daily toolbox talks, and ensure all works adhere to Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS).
- Quality Control: Review architectural and engineering blueprints, ensuring works conform to specified drawings and client instructions. Identify and record defects, managing the implementation of corrective actions.
- Progress Tracking & Reporting: Assist the Site Manager in preparing 4-week look-ahead programmes. Maintain accurate daily logs of resources, site conditions, plant machinery, and work completed.
- Logistics & Material Management: Coordinate the delivery, safe storage, and efficient distribution of materials and plant equipment. Monitor inventory levels to minimize project downtime.
- Stakeholder Liaison: Act as a proactive problem solver on site, collaborating with Site Managers, engineers, health & safety officers, and utility representatives to resolve technical queries or clashes.
Required Qualifications & Certifications
- CSCS Card: Gold (Supervisor) or Black (Manager) card is essential.
- Safety Training: SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme) or SSSTS (Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme).
- First Aid: Valid First Aid at Work (FAW) certificate.
- Driving Licence: Full, clean UK driving licence.
- Education: NVQ Level 3/4 in Civil Engineering, Occupational Work Supervision, or Construction Management (or equivalent technical experience).
Skills & Experience
- Industry Experience: Minimum 3–5 years of experience supervising civil engineering projects (e.g., deep drainage, earthworks, highways, concrete structures, or utilities).
- Technical Proficiency: Strong ability to interpret complex civil engineering drawings, specifications, and Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs).
- Plant Awareness: Good working knowledge of heavy plant machinery and street works/excavation requirements (NRSWA is a distinct advantage).
- Communication: Excellent verbal leadership skills to manage site crews, alongside clear written skills for completing daily site diaries and safety reports.
- Problem Solving: Ability to identify site constraints, evaluate risks swiftly, and implement practical solutions under pressure.
