About the Opportunity

The ANSWERS Software Service has, for over 40 years, supplied both the UK nuclear industry and the wider international market high-quality software and consultancy services in the areas of reactor physics, radiation shielding & dosimetry, criticality assessment, and nuclear data. Our dedicated team of specialist engineers, physicists, mathematicians, and software developers produce bespoke software packages for computational modelling of complex physics and support our worldwide customer base with a dedicated helpline and experienced consultants and analysts to provide comprehensive capabilities in key areas such as nuclear safety, plant performance, and operational efficiency.

The ANSWERS Software Service is looking to grow our dedicated team of specialist software developers and engineering consultants. As part of this, we are currently recruiting for interns for 2026 to work within the ANSWERS team, based at either our Warrington or Dorchester offices with some home working available. We are looking for students in higher education studying Engineering, Physics, Maths, or Software Engineering to undertake specific short-term projects in mathematical methods development, software development, physics modelling, and validation. These projects will address some of the cutting-edge aspects of nuclear research to provide inputs to our longer-term research projects for our international customers.

Students will be matched to the most suitable project for their current course of study and will have a dedicated internal mentor available. Projects typically last around 13 weeks, with some flexibility. Ideally, you will be in your final year of study, but all candidates will be assessed on their individual merits.

The nuclear industry is moving away from traditional reactor designs to new Small Modular Reactor (SMR) and Advanced Modular Reactor (AMR) designs, with improved safety features and lower build costs. These new concepts bring exciting new modelling challenges requiring the introduction of innovative new mathematics, physics, engineering, and software engineering techniques. This role will present excellent opportunities for the development of skills and experience in physics and maths, particularly as applied to the latest nuclear engineering challenges facing the industry today.

Qualifications

  • Must be in higher education studying Physics, Maths, a relevant engineering discipline, or a similar subject.
  • Ability to think innovatively and to solve complex problems.
  • Capacity to quickly and efficiently absorb new technical skills.
  • Ability to communicate well, both verbally and in writing with internal and external experts and customers.
  • Self-motivated, with an ability and desire to work collaboratively.

Our Culture

Our values are built on a strong foundation of safety, integrity, and respect for every individual. People are at the heart of our mission, and we believe in supporting one another through a culture of care and collaboration. We strive to create a workplace where everyone feels they belong and can thrive. Supporting mental wellbeing and fostering a sense of connection are essential to how we work. When we embrace different perspectives and work together, we become more innovative, more agile, and more successful.
