About the opportunity:
We are seeking a Manufacturing Engineer to work with and support a key assurance role within the Ministry of Defence’s (MoD) Nuclear Submarine Build Programme.
This role supports the Independent Nuclear Assurance (INA) team, which provides independent nuclear safety and technical advice to the MoD. Specifically, this role will be providing Independent Third-Party Witnessing, surveillance and inspection for the manufacture and testing of the Naval Reactor Plants (NRP), which is a key part of delivering the UK’s future submarine fleet, including the Continuous at Sea Deterrent (CASD).
The ideal candidate would have detailed understanding and experience of manufacturing, testing techniques and design/quality standards for high reliability pressure equipment or structural components, alongside effective communication skills to work with the INA team, MoD Customer and enterprise partners. Training and support can be provided to supplement candidates where further development in specific areas may be necessary.
The focus of this role would predominantly consist of working on the equipment suppliers’ site in Derby to monitor and witness the manufacturing work being undertaken and utilise existing experience and knowledge to provide an independent and balanced view on how it is being carried out. This will involve occasional travel to the INA office in Birchwood, MoD HQ offices in Bristol and supplier sites.
Key Responsibilities
- Conducting on-site Independent Third-Party Witnessing of NRP manufacturing processes, methods and testing.
- Provision of impartial, balanced and proportionate advice to the MoD in support of the manufacture of future NRPs.
- Representing INA at meetings with MoD and their contractors.
- Preparation of reports to articulate and brief findings.
- Conducting work according to the best applicable safety, technical and regulatory standards, consistent with relevant good practice and quality assurance.
- Complying with information security requirements.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- A Degree, HND or Apprenticeship in Engineering, with hands-on operational experience in relevant manufacturing processes.
- Expert knowledge of one (or more) of the following manufacturing processes: Metal Casting, Bulk Deformation Processes (e.g. forging, rolling, etc), Powder Metallurgy (e.g. Hot-Isostatic Pressing & Additive Manufacturing), Heat Treatment of Metals, Welding Processes, Coating/ Deposition Processes, Metal Removal Processes (e.g. cutting, machining, chemical machining, etc), and Cleaning/ Surface Treatments.
- Experience of performing manufacturing process audits, ideally with an emphasis on ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) compliance.
- Understanding of developing and implementing Technical Specifications.
- Understanding and experience of conducting continuous improvement activities within manufacturing (e.g. Kaizen, Six Sigma, 5S, etc),
- Knowledge of engineering materials and their associated properties (e.g. low-alloy & carbon steels, stainless steel, nickel-based alloys).
- Expertise in measurement, inspection and testing techniques,
- Effective communication skills - to be able to work directly with the customer and their contractors,
- Safety and Environmental Awareness - Understanding of safety protocols and environmental impact considerations associated with manufacturing processes,
- This role will require security clearance; therefore, applications should hold or be able to obtain security clearance in the UK
Desirable
- Experience of using Computer-Aided Design & Manufacturing (CAD/CAM),
- Chartership, or working towards, within an engineering or scientific discipline,
- Knowledge or experience of nuclear engineering and As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) principals.
