We are a small, close-knit secondary SEN school in Newbury where relationships and confidence-building are at the heart of everything we do. Our students have learning difficulties, autism and social, emotional and mental health needs. The Role

  • Teach Maths across secondary year groups, delivering engaging lessons that inspire students who may have previously struggled or disengaged, working collaboratively with our primary school maths teachers.
  • Deliver the Maths curriculum with real autonomy, working with senior leadership to design an ambitious and accessible curriculum using White Rose Maths.
  • Organise students into learning groups for Maths, using your professional judgement to ensure every child is appropriately challenged and supported.
  • Have a small tutor group where you will deliver our whole school personal development programme and be a key adult in those students' lives.
  • Use the Thrive approach and trauma-informed PACE model to manage behaviour with empathy, structure and clear boundaries.
  • Work with a brilliant team of colleagues who share your commitment to these young people.
  • Track progress carefully, celebrate the small wins and use assessment to shape what happens next.
  • Plan enrichment and learning beyond the classroom, from community visits to school trips and activities that build confidence and skills.

What You Will Bring

Essential

  • A degree or equivalent qualification in a specialist subject.
  • Strong knowledge of the Maths curriculum and genuine confidence teaching Maths at secondary level.
  • Understanding of how to adapt the curriculum for students with SEN, including those with learning difficulties, autism and SEMH needs.
  • Knowledge of behaviour management techniques and the resilience to use them consistently with young people who have complex needs.
  • Understanding of the SEN Code of Practice and experience working with Individual Education Plans.
  • Strong planning and assessment skills, with the ability to personalise learning for individual students.
  • Understanding of safeguarding, child protection, health and safety and equal opportunities.
  • Relevant teaching experience, ideally with young people with SEN.
  • Excellent communication skills with students, families and colleagues.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to lead a curriculum area in a small school setting.
  • Resilience, emotional intelligence and a genuine passion for working with vulnerable young people.

Desirable

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), QTLS or equivalent training.
  • Experience working in a SEN school or alternative provision setting.
  • Knowledge of White Rose Maths.
  • Understanding of therapeutic frameworks such as Thrive and trauma-informed approaches including PACE.
  • Experience leading a curriculum area or subject coordination.
  • Specialist SEN qualifications or training.

Working pattern and benefits

  • Monday to Friday, 8.00am to 4.00pm, with minimal after-hours commitments.
