An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Design Engineer to join our expanding in‑house Civil & Structural Design team and play a key role in the development of a new Permanent Works Design presence in Pontyclun, South Wales. As part of our continued investment in engineering excellence, we are establishing a dedicated South Wales design hub to support a growing portfolio of rail and infrastructure projects. This role offers the opportunity to become part of a new and ambitious team, helping to deliver innovative civil and structural engineering solutions across a range of challenging rail schemes.
Working alongside experienced engineers and technical specialists, you will contribute to projects from feasibility through to detailed design, supporting the delivery of safe, practical and sustainable engineering solutions while developing your own technical and professional capabilities.

About The Business Unit
Following the successful award of several long-term framework agreements with major rail and infrastructure clients, we continue to invest in and expand our in‑house Civil & Structural Design capability. Our team delivers multidisciplinary engineering solutions across framework contracts, asset management programmes, infrastructure renewals, enhancement projects and tendered schemes. The expansion into Pontyclun represents a significant investment in our regional capability and provides an exciting opportunity to help establish and grow a new design team in South Wales.
Typical projects include:
- Bridge reconstruction, refurbishment and replacement schemes
- Station enhancement and accessibility projects
- Platforms, footbridges and associated rail infrastructure
- Civil and structural asset management programmes
- Drainage and earthworks schemes
- Tunnels, retaining structures and lineside civils projects

The Role
Reporting to a Senior Design Engineer or Principal Engineer, the Design Engineer is responsible for the development of technical solutions within project budget, programme and quality requirements. You will support the delivery of permanent works civil and structural engineering projects, developing engineering solutions, producing calculations and technical reports, undertaking design work and collaborating with other engineers, technicians and project teams. The role offers excellent exposure to a wide range of rail infrastructure projects and provides a strong platform for progression towards Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop engineering solutions from feasibility through to detailed design.
- Contribute to the delivery of permanent works civils and structures projects across the rail sector.
- Challenge briefs and contribute innovative engineering solutions based on sound engineering principles.
- Produce engineering calculations, reports, sketches and design deliverables to relevant standards and best practice.
- Support the development of design philosophies and technical approaches.
- Attend site inspections and surveys to inform design development.
- Assist in undertaking design checks and technical reviews where appropriate.
- Produce and maintain Designer's Risk Assessments and Decision Logs.
- Work closely with technicians and designers to ensure coordinated and efficient project delivery.
- Ensure compliance with CDM Regulations, Safe by Design principles and engineering standards.
- Support project delivery within agreed programme, quality and budget targets.
- Attend meetings with clients, stakeholders and project teams.
- Contribute to continuous improvement, innovation and best practice across the design team.
- Work within BIM project environments where required.
What We're Looking For
We are seeking a motivated and ambitious engineer who is passionate about infrastructure design and keen to develop their career within a growing rail engineering team.
Essential Requirements
- Degree qualified in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Working towards IEng or CEng accreditation with a recognised professional institution.
- Minimum three years' experience in the design of civil engineering structures.
- Experience within the rail sector, with an understanding of bridges, stations, earthworks, drainage and associated infrastructure.
- Good understanding of engineering principles and structural design practices.
- Experience producing engineering calculations, reports and technical documentation.
- Knowledge of relevant British Standards, Eurocodes and industry design standards.
- Familiarity with structural assessment and design software.
- Understanding of construction methodologies and buildability considerations.
- Strong communication and collaborative working skills.
- Ability to manage workload effectively across multiple projects.
Desirable
- Experience working on Network Rail projects.
- Understanding of the CRE process and engineering assurance requirements.
- Knowledge of CDM Regulations and Safe by Design principles.
- Experience working within BIM-led project environments.
- Site inspection and survey experience.
- Sentinel PTS certification.
