An exciting opportunity has arisen for a CAD Technician to join our expanding in-house Civil & Structural Design team and play a key role in the development of a new Permanent Works Design presence in Pontyclun. As part of our continued growth and investment in engineering design capability, we are establishing a dedicated South Wales team to support a diverse portfolio of rail infrastructure projects.

About The Team

Our in-house Design & Engineering team delivers multidisciplinary civil and structural engineering solutions across a broad range of rail infrastructure and asset management projects. Working closely with major framework clients and project delivery teams, we support schemes from feasibility and concept development through to detailed design and construction support.

The expansion into Pontyclun represents an exciting opportunity to strengthen our regional capability and support the delivery of infrastructure projects throughout South Wales and beyond.

Typical projects include:

  • Bridge assessment, strengthening and renewal schemes
  • Station improvement and refurbishment projects
  • Access for All (AfA) schemes
  • Platforms, footbridges and accessibility infrastructure
  • Rail civils and asset management works
  • Drainage and lineside infrastructure improvements
  • Structures including bridges, tunnels and retaining walls
  • Multi-disciplinary rail enhancement and renewal projects

The Role

As a CAD Technician, you will support engineers and designers in the production of high-quality engineering drawings, models and technical documentation across a range of civil and structural engineering projects. You will play an important role in transforming engineering concepts into accurate and coordinated design information, helping to ensure projects are delivered efficiently, safely and to the highest standards.

Working within a collaborative in-house design environment, you will gain exposure to a diverse portfolio of rail infrastructure schemes while developing your technical capabilities and professional experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce engineering drawings and technical details in accordance with company and industry CAD standards.
  • Support the delivery of permanent works designs across rail civil and structural engineering projects.
  • Assist in developing engineering solutions from concept through to detailed design.
  • Interpret engineering information and accurately translate design requirements into technical drawings and schedules.
  • Challenge design briefs where appropriate and contribute ideas to improve solutions.
  • Assist with site inspections and surveys to inform design development.
  • Ensure drawings and technical outputs are accurate, coordinated and compliant with relevant standards and specifications.
  • Maintain drawing records and assist with document control processes.
  • Liaise with engineers, technicians and project delivery teams to ensure efficient project delivery.
  • Support the management of Designer's Risk Assessments and Safe by Design principles.
  • Work within BIM project environments where required.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of CAD processes, standards and design delivery tools.

What We're Looking For

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented technician who is passionate about engineering design and keen to develop a long-term career within the rail infrastructure sector.

Essential Requirements

  • HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Experience producing engineering drawings within a civil engineering, infrastructure or construction environment.
  • Knowledge of CAD software and engineering drawing standards.
  • Strong understanding of technical drawing production and design coordination.
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Strong communication and team-working skills.
  • Ability to manage workload effectively across multiple projects.

Desirable

  • Experience within the rail industry.
  • Experience supporting bridge, station, structures or property-related projects.
  • Knowledge of BIM principles and digital design delivery.
  • CSCS Professionally Qualified Person card or equivalent.
  • Sentinel PTS certification.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Working towards professional accreditation with a relevant professional body, such as EngTech.
