The Role
As an Apprentice Civil Engineer, you will form an integral part of our site delivery teams, working under the guidance of experienced Site Engineers and Project Engineers. You will develop strong technical and practical skills through hands-on experience on live construction sites, supported by structured learning alongside your apprenticeship studies.
Your day-to-day activities may include:
- Assisting Site Engineers with setting-out, surveys and site measurements
- Supporting quality inspections and ensuring works are built to specification
- Preparing and maintaining site records, reports and diaries
- Monitoring health, safety and environmental compliance on site
- Assisting with temporary works, permits and method statements
- Liaising with site teams, subcontractors and supervisors
- Supporting the efficient and safe delivery of works on active infrastructure sites
By the time you complete your apprenticeship, you will have developed a strong foundation in site engineering and construction delivery.
Training & Qualification
You will study towards a Civil Engineering or Site Engineering apprenticeship qualification, delivered alongside your role through a combination of workplace learning and college or university attendance (e.g. day release). The exact qualification route will be confirmed based on business need and individual development plans.

- Be motivated, proactive and keen to learn
- Have strong communication, organisational and basic IT skills
- Be willing to travel to project locations across Scotland as required
- Be willing to commit to an apprenticeship alongside full-time employment
Due to the safety-critical nature of this role and the operational requirements associated with working on rail infrastructure, applicants must be aged 18 or over by the time the role commences in September 2026 (or be approaching their 18th birthday at that time). No previous construction experience is required – we are looking for enthusiasm, commitment and the right attitude. Where applicable, candidates must also be able to meet safety, medical and security requirements associated with working on live infrastructure sites.
