An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Assistant Project Manager to join our Rail Systems team in the South region, supporting the delivery of a diverse portfolio of engineering and E&P rail projects. This includes mechanical, electrical, electrification, power, telecoms, comms and signalling schemes across a range of multidisciplinary environments.

This role will support senior project managers in delivering multi-disciplinary rail construction projects safely, on time, within budget and in line with Network Rail and other regulatory requirements. You will play a key part in coordinating civil engineering, MEP systems, signalling, telecoms and station upgrade works across a variety of frameworks and standalone schemes.

The Role

As an Assistant Project Manager (Rail Systems / E&P), you will support the delivery of engineering activities across allocated projects, ensuring compliance with contract requirements, safety standards and programme timescales. Working closely with Project Managers and the Senior Construction Management team, you will play a key role in the successful execution of our rail systems portfolio.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support project involvement from pre-qualification and tendering through to completion
  • Support project planning, scheduling and programme development
  • Coordinate multi-disciplinary teams including designers, engineers and contractors
  • Ensure site teams understand contract requirements and have the resources needed to meet project objectives
  • Support delivery in accordance with applicable legislation, contract terms and conditions, Contract Health & Safety Plan, and Contract Quality & Environmental Plan
  • Assist in delivering projects to programme and budget
  • Monitor budgets, cost schedules and support commercial evaluations and change control processes
  • Support the management of subcontractors to ensure safe, high-quality and efficient delivery
  • Monitor project progress and support corrective actions where required
  • Work with the Project Delivery Team to identify, agree and manage contract changes
  • Produce and maintain project documentation including Risk Assessments, Work Package Plans, Task Briefs, ITPs, risk registers, design review records and governance documentation
  • Support site inductions and maintain competence and induction registers
  • Maintain SHEQ inspections, registers and documentation
  • Conduct regular site engagement and inspections with direct teams and subcontractors
  • Interpret drawings, specifications and technical information accurately
  • Maintain accurate daily records and report issues promptly
  • Liaise with clients and contractor teams to support smooth project delivery
  • Assist with programme management and commercial processes
  • Contribute to identifying business development opportunities

Requirements

To excel in this role, you will ideally bring experience in rail systems project delivery, working across E&P, M&E, electrification, power, signalling or telecoms projects.

Essential:

  • Full UK driving licence
  • Minimum HNC in Engineering (or equivalent)
  • Experience as an Assistant Project Manager in a rail contracting environment
  • PTS certification
  • Technical background with underpinning knowledge suitable for IRSE licence progression
  • Knowledge of BS 7671:2018 (IET Wiring Regulations – 18th Edition)

Desirable:

  • IRSE Licence (or working towards)
