Working closely with senior management and contracts teams, you will play a key role in evaluating opportunities, preparing competitive tenders and helping drive continued business growth.
The Role
As a Structural Steel Estimator, you will take ownership of tender enquiries from initial review through to submission, ensuring estimates are commercially competitive, technically accurate and aligned with project requirements. Key responsibilities include:
- Managing structural steelwork tender enquiries from receipt to submission.
- Reviewing structural engineering drawings, specifications and 3D models.
- Producing accurate material take-offs for structural steel sections, plates, bolts and secondary steelwork.
- Preparing detailed cost estimates covering materials, fabrication, coatings, transport and installation.
- Obtaining and analysing supplier and subcontractor quotations.
- Identifying value engineering opportunities and cost-saving solutions.
- Assessing commercial and contractual risks associated with projects.
- Supporting client meetings, tender reviews and post-tender discussions.
- Working closely with contracts and operational teams to support project delivery.
What We're Looking For
- Previous estimating experience within structural steelwork, steel fabrication or heavy engineering.
- Strong technical ability to interpret structural drawings, specifications and connection details.
- Excellent commercial awareness and understanding of estimating principles.
- Experience preparing material take-offs and detailed cost calculations.
- Strong negotiation and supplier management skills.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines.
- A proactive and solutions-focused approach.
Desirable Qualifications & Experience
- HNC, HND or Degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Quantity Surveying or Construction Management.
- Experience with Tekla or a structural steel detailing background.
- Knowledge of NEC and JCT contracts.
- Experience within fabrication, steel erection or structural steel project environments.
