Our client is seeking experienced R&D Tax Assistant Manager/Managers (Software & IT Specialist) to join a growing R&D Tax team regionally across UK offices. Focusing primarily on the technology sector, you will work directly with software developers, engineers and technical leaders to identify qualifying R&D activities, prepare robust technical analyses and support the delivery of high-quality R&D tax claims. This role offers the opportunity to specialise in the technical side of R&D tax, while also gaining exposure to costing methodologies, claim preparation and wider innovation incentive projects as your experience develops.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Lead technical interviews with software developers, engineers and senior technology stakeholders to identify qualifying R&D activities.
  • Prepare and review high-quality technical narratives supporting R&D tax relief claims.
  • Assess software and technology projects against UK R&D tax legislation and HMRC guidance.
  • Act as a trusted adviser to clients on technical R&D matters and legislative developments.
  • Support responses to HMRC enquiries and technical challenges.
  • Review work prepared by junior team members and provide coaching and feedback.
  • Collaborate with tax, costing and sector specialists to deliver comprehensive R&D claims.
  • Opportunity to gain exposure to cost analysis and financial aspects of R&D claims.

Requirements:

  • Strong understanding of software development lifecycles, architecture and technology projects.
  • Knowledge of UK R&D tax legislation, including the SME, RDEC and merged schemes.
  • Ability to confidently engage with technical stakeholders and translate complex concepts into clear technical reports.
  • Excellent analytical, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience mentoring junior team members would be advantageous.
  • A background in software engineering, computer science or technology consulting would be highly beneficial.
