A district council is looking for an interim Technical Accountant to strengthen the finance team's confidence and capability around technical accounting and the Statement of Accounts.
This is as much a coaching role as a production role: the successful candidate will work alongside existing team members, build their skills, and leave the team better equipped to handle technical accounting requirements independently going forward.
This role suits an accountant who enjoys developing people as much as producing the numbers themselves, and who can explain technical concepts clearly to staff at different stages of their career.
Key Responsibilities Lead and support the production of the Statement of Accounts, working directly with team members rather than around them.
Build the team's understanding of technical accounting standards (IFRS, CIPFA Code) and how they apply in a local government setting.
Identify skills gaps within the team and design practical, on-the-job coaching to close them.
Review working papers and disclosures, using each review as a teaching opportunity rather than a simple sign-off.
Support the team through the external audit process, helping staff understand auditor queries and how to respond to them.
Help embed more resilient processes so the team is less reliant on interim support in future accounts cycles. ...
