Location: Primarily remote (occasional onsite visits required – London/ Manchester/ Newcastle i.e. multi-site approximately once every one/ two months)

Contract Type: Permanent / or 12-month Fixed Term Contract (with a view going perm)

We are seeking an experienced Senior AWS DevOps Engineer to support large-scale cloud-native delivery within a complex enterprise and government-aligned environment. The successful candidate will work within multidisciplinary Agile teams, contributing to platform engineering, deployment automation, and operational excellence across shared cloud and Kubernetes environments.

Role Overview

The role requires a strong background in:

  • Kubernetes and containerisation
  • AWS cloud engineering
  • Infrastructure as Code
  • CI/CD automation
  • Secure platform operations

This role is highly hands-on and suited to engineers comfortable working across infrastructure, automation, and cloud-native tooling.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain cloud-native infrastructure and deployment pipelines
  • Manage and support Kubernetes-based application deployments
  • Develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code using Terraform
  • Create and maintain CI/CD pipelines using GitLab CI
  • Build and manage container images and local development environments
  • Support secure and scalable AWS infrastructure implementations
  • Automate infrastructure provisioning and operational processes
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to improve delivery and operational practices
  • Ensure solutions align with: Security standards, Platform best practices, Least privilege principles

Core Technical Skills

Cloud Engineering (AWS & Azure)

  • AWS (Primary)
  • Strong experience with Amazon Web Services
  • Experience building and supporting cloud-native infrastructure using services such as: EC2 / IAM / S3 / VPC networking / EKS
  • Strong understanding of: Least privilege access principles, Secure cloud architecture, Shared infrastructure environments
  • Azure (Secondary / Desirable)
  • Exposure to Microsoft Azure
  • Understanding of cloud concepts transferable across AWS and Azure environments

Kubernetes & Containerisation (Essential)

  • Strong hands-on experience with Kubernetes
  • Deep understanding of: Pods, deployments, services, ingress, Namespaces and RBAC, Shared cluster operations and multi-team environments
  • Experience deploying applications using: Helm charts, Kustomize, Terraform-driven Kubernetes provisioning

Containerisation

  • Strong experience with Docker
  • Ability to: Build and optimise containers using Dockerfiles, Manage local development environments using Docker Compose, Troubleshoot container-related issues
  • Good understanding of: Image layering, Security and image optimisation, Container lifecycle management

Terraform (Critical)

  • Strong hands-on experience with Terraform
  • Ability to: Build reusable infrastructure modules, Manage environments and state securely, Provision cloud and Kubernetes resources

GitLab CI/CD

  • Strong experience with GitLab CI/CD
  • Ability to: Design and maintain CI/CD pipelines, Work with shared pipeline fragments/templates from central repositories, Improve automation and deployment consistency

Deployment Automation

  • Experience implementing deployment pipelines for: Kubernetes workloads, Infrastructure changes, Container image promotion
  • Understanding of: Build and release strategies, Environment promotion models, Deployment rollback mechanisms
