Your Role
Amber Labs is seeking an experienced Software Developer to join our growing engineering team. You will play a key role on a confidential government programme, designing and delivering secure, scalable, and high-performance digital services. This role requires strong backend expertise, a cloud-native mindset, and the ability to contribute at a senior level across architecture, delivery, and best practices.

What You’ll Do
As a Software Developer, you will lead the development of robust backend services and REST APIs using Node.js, working within a microservices and event-driven architecture. You will collaborate closely with DevOps and product teams, contribute to infrastructure and deployment automation, and help shape technical decisions to ensure systems are resilient, secure, and maintainable.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain backend services and REST APIs using Node.js
  • Build and support microservices-based architectures
  • Design and work with event-driven systems using Kafka and AWS SQS
  • Implement Infrastructure as Code and deployment automation using Terraform
  • Deploy and manage services within AWS, including ECS, SQS, and Cognito
  • Maintain and enhance CI/CD pipelines using GitLab

Your Skills and Experience

  • Strong commercial experience with Node.js and backend development
  • Proven experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs
  • Solid understanding of microservices and event-driven architectures
  • Hands-on experience with Kafka and AWS SQS
  • Strong experience with AWS services, particularly ECS, SQS, and Cognito
  • Proficiency in Terraform for infrastructure and deployments
  • Experience with Docker and containerisation
  • Familiarity with GitLab and CI/CD workflows
  • Comfortable working in agile, collaborative environments
  • Previous experience working on government or public sector projects

Additional Information
This role at Amber Labs can be offered as a 12-month fixed-term contract or a permanent position. Please note that at this time, we are unable to consider candidates who require sponsorship or hold a visa of any type.
