With circa 2,000 seats, Sunderland Empire is the largest seated theatre between Manchester and Edinburgh. A grade II listed building from the Edwardian era, with an exquisite Rococo interior, it hosts an exciting and high-profile programme, from the latest West End musicals and the most spectacular Disney shows, to community performances, rooted in the city and serving the north of England.

The Creative Learning department engages local adults, children, and young people from a diverse range of backgrounds through our work in schools, our regular weekly programme of classes and our community projects. You will also benefit from the support of Sunderland Empire Theatre Trust who champion our work.

The ATG INSPIRE Creative Practitioner Role involves joining our established pool of artists & practitioners in the delivery of an exciting upcoming programme. Based within Sunderland Empire Theatre, you will join our freelance pool supporting weekly sessions, schools' workshops and artist development, alongside other opportunities as they arise. You’ll report to the ATG INSPIRE Producer and ATG INSPIRE Officer.

We are specifically looking for practitioners with experience in one or more of the following:

  • Voice and Musical Direction
  • Musical Theatre
  • Dance/Choreography
  • Drama and performance

You will have the opportunity to plan and deliver workshops and creative projects as required for the wider CL Programme both show related and non-show related. You will work with our team in a Freelance Practitioner capacity, supporting our commitment to successful working partnerships with visiting production companies, local arts organisations, education institutions and individual emerging artists. We actively encourage applicants with non-traditional routes into the arts.

Key responsibilities:

  • To plan and deliver high quality and exciting learning & participatory workshops/activities
  • To liaise closely with the CL team, helping to maintain effective communication
  • Contribute to the creation and development of education support material, project plans and workshop plans
  • Support evaluation of workshops with participants, teachers/group leaders
  • To work within Sunderland Empire and CL’s remit to provide as much access to activities as possible to people with a wide range of backgrounds and additional needs
  • To ensure that the theatre’s health and safety standards are met
  • To champion the work of ATG INSPIRE, the venue and wider strategies for the area
  • To operate in line with all ATG ENTERTAINMENT company policy & procedures, including but not limited to Safeguarding Policies and Privacy (GDPR)
  • To complete any other delegated tasks that may assist the CL department or ATG ENTERTAINMENT

Your skills, qualities, and experience:

Essential:

  • Exceptional experience in arts facilitation
  • Strong experience in a similar Arts/Education role
  • Experience of working with a broad cross section of communities including learners & audience members across a diverse range of participant groups and communities – including schools, learners with additional needs, children & young people, families, adults & older people
  • Outstanding organisational skills, including time keeping, administration of invoices and calendar management
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Excellent collaboration and team work skills that complement working with a vibrant and busy ATG INSPIRE team
  • Confidence to plan and deliver high quality arts and education based workshops, facilitate a devising process, project plan and self-evaluate all work
  • Knowledge & understanding of safeguarding legislation, DBS procedure and best practices relevant to working with children, young people and vulnerable adults

Desirable:

  • First Aid qualification
  • Experience and/or understanding of working in a theatre setting
  • Chaperone license
  • Experience working with young people identified as ‘at-risk’ of leaving education due to currently experiencing or at risk of developing emotional, mental health or complex behavioural needs.
