The Fortune Theatre is one of London’s smallest west end theatres with only 432 seats. The theatre was built in 1924 and opened on the 8th November 1924. The Fortune is a grade II listed building and has retained its art deco style. This theatre was named after the original Fortune Theatre at the Barbican where Shakespeare once performed. The Fortune theatre was designed by Ernest Schaufelberg and was built where a tavern once stood called the Albion Tavern. It was the first theatre to be built after World War I. The first show to be played here at the Fortune was ‘Sinners’ by Laurence Cowen. The Fortune was home to Women in Black since 1989 staying for 33 years! It is now home to the 5-star rated show Operation Mincemeat.
