Contract Solar Commissioning Engineer – Utility Scale

Location: UK (Site-based / project rotation)

Contract Length: 12 Months

Day Rate: Competitive DOE

Overview

We are supporting a major renewable energy contractor delivering multiple utility-scale solar PV and BESS projects across the UK. We are looking for an experienced Commissioning Engineer with a strong background in large-scale solar (30MW+) to support the final stages of project delivery through testing, energisation, and handover. This is a hands-on site role – you’ll be working closely with electrical teams, DNO/ICP representatives, and site management to ensure systems are fully tested, compliant, and ready for grid export.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Leading and supporting commissioning activities across utility-scale solar PV sites (30MW+)
  • Carrying out pre-commissioning checks, testing, and inspections of electrical systems
  • Working on LV/MV/HV systems including:
    • Inverters
    • Transformers
    • Switchgear
    • Protection systems
  • Supporting grid connection and energisation activities with DNO/ICP
  • Ensuring all systems are tested in line with design specs and compliance standards
  • Producing and signing off commissioning documentation and test records
  • Identifying and resolving faults during commissioning stages
  • Working closely with Site Managers, Electrical Supervisors, and SAPs
  • Supporting final handover packs and as-built documentation

What we’re looking for:

  • Proven experience commissioning utility-scale solar PV projects (30MW+)
  • Strong understanding of electrical systems in solar farms
  • Experience working on EPC or principal contractor-led projects
  • Comfortable working on live HV/LV systems in construction environments
  • Solid understanding of grid connection and energisation processes
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and schematics
  • Experience working alongside DNOs / ICPs during commissioning phases

Desirable:

  • BESS commissioning experience
  • HV authorisations (AP / SAP / switching exposure)
  • 18th Edition / electrical qualifications
  • IOSH / SMSTS
  • Experience with inverter manufacturers
  • Experience in NEC contract environments

Contract Details:

  • 12 month duration (project dependent)
  • Multiple UK solar sites available
  • Outside IR35 (depending on engagement model)
  • Immediate start / short notice preferred
  • Strong pipeline of utility-scale solar & BESS work
