As a Lab Engineer, you will be a core member of the Ring and Blink engineering organization, responsible for operating and continuously improving the Cambridge test lab used by software development and quality engineering teams.

The lab supports automated release validation, nightly testing, issue investigation, and validation of features in development across Android and i OS mobile devices, physical Ring and Blink products, and simulated device environments.

You will own the day-to-day operation of the lab and ensure that devices, test stands, supporting infrastructure, and test environments remain available and reliable.

The role combines hands-on hardware work with device provisioning, troubleshooting, lab infrastructure support, automation, and coordination with engineering teams.

  • Key job responsibilities
  • Operate and maintain the Cambridge Ring and Blink test lab, keeping devices and test environments reliably available.
  • Assemble, install, configure, and maintain mobile-device and Ring/Blink product test stands.
  • Provision Android and i OS devices: OS configuration, software installation, setup, and recovery.
  • Onboard new Ring and Blink product families, including stand assembly, device flashing, provisioning, configuration, and connectivity setup.
  • Troubleshoot hardware, software, network, Wi-Fi, USB, power, and connectivity issues affecting lab equipment and automated testing; recover failed devices and stands and run root-cause investigation for recurring issues.
  • Install, replace, and maintain lab hardware: phones, embedded devices, Mac systems, test controllers, networking equipment, cables, and relays.
  • Develop and maintain scripts and lightweight automation for provisioning, health checks, recovery, monitoring, and device configuration.
  • Monitor lab health and improve reliability, utilisation, maintainability, and operational efficiency.
  • Coordinate hardware installations, device shipments, inventory, purchasing, and asset lifecycle management.
  • Maintain documentation for lab configuration, operating procedures, device onboarding, troubleshooting, and recovery.
  • Work with SDETs, software engineers, product, IT/networking teams, facilities, and suppliers to resolve lab issues and support lab expansion.
  • Follow applicable lab health, safety, security, and equipment-handling requirements.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent work experience
    - Experience in software QA testing including writing test plans, use cases, and issue reports
    - Experience in a consumer electronics lab environment
    - Experience in a Linux or Unix environment
    - Experience working on a consumer hardware or software product
  • Knowledge of Jenkins build environments
    - Experience configuring, deploying, and testing software updates, including the ability to identify issues and escalate to development as appropriate
    - Experience running user trials, beta, field testing or collecting customer feedback
    - Experience working with hardware and software teams for setting up, testing, and troubleshooting prototype devices
