AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. You will join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You will collaborate with people across AWS to help deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. The Decommissioning Technical team is responsible for processing and facilitating large-scale legacy Data Center equipment through a liquidation process to ensure that targeted equipment is ready to be removed from premises. Team members will also process large volumes of customer data to ensure that all customer data is sanitized and properly managed.

We are expanding our infrastructure team and are looking for a Rack Decom Technician. As part of the Rack Decom team, you will be responsible for processing and facilitating legacy Data Center equipment through a liquidation process to ensure that targeted equipment is ready to be removed off premises. You will also process large volumes of customer data to ensure that all customer data is sanitized and properly managed. You will develop familiarity with basic PC components/hardware (HDD/SSD/Flash/Removable storage media/RAM/CPU/Motherboard/Input-Output devices).

This is an entry-level position and qualified candidates do not require intimate details of software operations or networking protocols. There may be an element of shift-based work and physically demanding work required with this role.

Key job responsibilities:
  • Decommissioning and processing of legacy hardware out of the data center facilities
  • Adhere to security and safety best practices in the data center
  • Unpacking/repacking fragile electronics
  • Relocating and moving large enterprise equipment
  • Creating/attaching labels and barcodes
  • Hard drive installation, removal and destruction
  • Basic Networking hardware removal/installation and clearing of configurations
  • Updating progress through a web ticketing system or to a team lead
  • Escalating to senior technicians and management as needed/required
  • Familiarity with basic PC components/hardware: HDD/SSD/Flash/Removable storage media/USB/FireWire/Esata/RAM/CPU/Motherboard/Input-Output devices
  • Laptop and basic IT software literacy
  • Works well with others and communicates/promotes cross-team functionality
  • Ability to perform duties constantly and without deviations unless otherwise instructed

The decom team operates across all Data Centers in the region and carries out activities to ensure that AWS can scale to fulfill customer capacity demand. The team contributes by decommissioning legacy racks to free up positions for reuse. These activities require strong cross-team collaboration with security, logistics, environment, safety, data center engineering, and data center operations internal teams. The team also manages vendors and engages with colo management as part of this role.

Qualifications:
  • High school or equivalent diploma
  • Experience with computer hardware troubleshooting and repair
  • Experience in networking
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience dealing effectively with customers during problem resolution and operating efficiently under pressure
  • Experience working in a colocation data center facility
