The Amateur FA is looking to appoint a Non-Executive Director who will act as the Board Chair. We are looking for an individual with skills and experience in a Board context with the desire to support grassroots football and encourage a safe environment across Amateur FA football. We are looking for an ambassador for the organisation who can act as a custodian of the highest standards of integrity, inclusion, respect and governance.
The Chair will:
- Be responsible for the leadership of the Board of Directors and be accountable to the Membership of Amateur FA.
- Oversee the affairs of the Association and ensure that the Board meets its obligations and responsibilities.
- Hold the CEO and Board to account for the performance of the Association.
- Ensure that each Director fulfils their duties for the effective governance of the Association.
- Effectively manage and moderate Board discussions and decisions.
- Act as an ambassador for the Association and role model the AFA’s values.
- Performance manage the Chief Executive Officer.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as a Director of the Association and lead the Board in setting the strategy.
- Execute the responsibilities of a Company Director in accordance with the Companies Act (2006).
- Ensure a clear division between the Board’s management and oversight role.
- Lead the Board in the approval of the long-term financial plan and annual budget.
- Set the agenda for Board meetings in consultation with the CEO.
- Chair Board meetings effectively, ensuring timely and clear information.
- Create an environment of psychological safety, respect, and inclusion.
- Demonstrate transparency and accountability.
- Monitor the delivery of the strategic plan.
- Manage the performance of the CEO.
- Lead the Board in identifying actions to support diversity targets.
- Represent the Association at meetings and functions.
- Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the Board.

Skills
- Essential: Excellent meeting chairing skills, listening skills to ensure all voices are heard, strategic leadership and management skills, ability to create a positive Board culture, understanding of the relationship between Chair, CEO, and Senior Independent Director, excellent interpersonal skills, ability to form productive relationships.
- Desirable: Performance management experience, positive coaching and mentoring, experience with Board Skills Audit, recruitment and selection skills, experience motivating volunteers.
Knowledge
- Essential: Knowledge of Board Director responsibilities, understanding of the Companies Act (2006), knowledge of Safeguarding Requirements, interest in Grassroots Football, awareness of the County FA Governance Code.
- Desirable: Knowledge of key legislation including Health and Safety, risk management, customer experience and engagement, succession planning.
