Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) - Durham

Milk Education is working with a number of welcoming and supportive Primary Schools across Durham and the surrounding areas and is looking to recruit passionate, enthusiastic, and dedicated Higher Level Teaching Assistants (HLTAs) to join schools from September 2026.

Whether you're an experienced HLTA or an experienced Teaching Assistant looking to take the next step in your education career, we'd love to hear from you. We have a range of long-term, full-time opportunities available, with the potential to become permanent for the right candidate.

You'll play a vital role in supporting classroom learning, delivering engaging activities, and helping pupils achieve their full potential while working alongside teachers and the wider school team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver planned lessons and learning activities across the primary curriculum.
  • Support teaching staff with classroom preparation and pupil progress.
  • Lead small group interventions and targeted learning sessions.
  • Provide support for pupils with a range of abilities and additional needs.
  • Assess and monitor pupil progress, providing feedback where appropriate.
  • Support positive behaviour management strategies.
  • Create a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers and support staff.
  • Build strong relationships with pupils, parents, carers, and colleagues.
  • Follow safeguarding and school policies at all times.

Skills, Qualifications & Experience

  • HLTA qualification or relevant experience within a similar role.
  • Strong experience working within a primary school environment.
  • Experience delivering lessons or leading small groups is desirable.
  • Good understanding of the National Curriculum.
  • Excellent classroom management and communication skills.
  • Ability to support and inspire pupils of all abilities.
  • A positive, flexible, and proactive approach.
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to apply).
