Milk Education are recruiting for a passionate and resilient SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a specialist school in Halifax that supports children and young people aged 7-18 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, Autism and additional learning needs. The school provides a nurturing, trauma‑informed environment where every pupil is encouraged to build confidence, resilience and achieve their full potential. This is a full‑time, long‑term opportunity with the potential to become permanent for the right candidate.
About the role
As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you'll play a key role in supporting pupils who have experienced barriers to learning. You'll help create a safe, structured and engaging environment where young people can develop academically, socially and emotionally.
Responsibilities:
- Supporting pupils with SEMH, Autism and additional needs in both classroom and pastoral settings
- Building positive, trusting relationships with pupils through consistency and empathy
- Encouraging emotional regulation and positive behaviour using a trauma‑informed approach
- Supporting pupils on a one‑to‑one basis and in small groups
- Assisting teachers with delivering engaging and differentiated learning activities
- Helping pupils develop confidence, resilience and independence
- Working collaboratively with teachers, therapists and wider professionals to support each child's individual needs
- Promoting safeguarding and pupil wellbeing at all times
What we're looking for:
- Experience supporting children or young people with SEMH, SEND, Autism or challenging behaviour
- A calm, patient and resilient approach
- Excellent communication and relationship‑building skills
- The ability to remain positive and professional in challenging situations
- A genuine passion for making a difference to the lives of vulnerable young people
- Previous experience in education, youth work, care, residential support or similar settings is desirable but not essential
