Are you a Psychology, Criminology or related graduate looking to gain valuable experience working with vulnerable young people before pursuing a career in Psychology, Criminal Justice, Youth Justice, Social Work or Mental Health?

Milk Education is recruiting for a Learning Support Assistant to join a specialist school in the Crawley area, supporting children and young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, autism and challenging behaviour.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who wants genuine, hands-on experience working with young people and an interest in understanding behaviour, emotional regulation and the impact of trauma.

About the role

You will be supporting pupils aged 4-16 who may experience difficulties with emotional regulation, social skills, communication and engagement in learning.

Many of the young people have experienced trauma, adverse childhood experiences or significant challenges outside of education. Building positive relationships and gaining their trust will be a key part of the role.

The school supports children with EHCPs relating to autism, associated conditions, speech and language and communication needs, anxiety, depression, trauma and other special educational needs.

You will work closely with teachers and the wider support team to help pupils feel safe, engaged and able to access their education.

Key responsibilities

• Build strong, positive relationships with pupils to encourage trust and engagement.
• Support young people to understand and manage their emotions and behaviour.
• Provide academic and emotional support on a one-to-one or small-group basis.
• Support pupils who may be at risk of exclusion to remain engaged with education.
• Assist teachers with lessons and classroom activities.
• Use positive behaviour strategies, restorative approaches and de-escalation techniques.
• Help pupils develop confidence, independence and important life skills.
• Support young people to develop strategies that will help them both in and outside of school.

What we're looking for

• A degree in Psychology, Criminology, Youth & Community Work or a related subject is desirable.
• Graduates considering careers in Psychology, Criminal Justice, Youth Justice, Social Work or Mental Health are particularly encouraged to apply.
• Graduates are welcome, but relevant experience in youth work, mentoring, social care or education will also be considered.
• A genuine interest in supporting vulnerable children and young people.
• A calm, patient and resilient approach, with the ability to remain composed during challenging situations.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to build relationships with young people.
• Experience working with SEMH, challenging behaviour or vulnerable young people is desirable but not essential, as full training and support will be provided.
• Most importantly, we are looking for someone who is genuine about wanting to make a difference. Understanding why you want to work with some of the most vulnerable children in society is just as important as your qualifications.
