Are you an aspiring School Counsellor looking to gain valuable experience supporting children with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs in a school setting? We are currently recruiting for a dedicated and compassionate SEMH Teaching Support Assistant to join a welcoming specialist secondary school in Sefton. This role is ideal for graduates or individuals considering a future career in counselling, psychology, therapy, social work or mental health support.
This is a fantastic opportunity to build hands-on experience working closely with young people who require emotional and behavioral support whilst developing key skills in communication, emotional regulation and relationship building.

The school has a strong focus on pastoral care and emotional wellbeing, helping students feel safe, understood and supported throughout their education. Staff work collaboratively to support pupils both academically and emotionally, using a consistent and therapeutic approach to behavior support and positive relationship building.
The RoleAs an SEMH Teaching Support Assistant, you will:
- Support pupils on a 1:1 basis and in small groups
- Help students regulate emotions and engage positively in learning
- Build strong and trusting relationships with young people
- Support behavior management and de-escalation strategies
- Encourage confidence, resilience and social development
- Work in a class of 7-10 pupils supporting a trained Teacher and another learning support assistant
- Interested in pursuing a career in school counselling, psychology or social care
- Experience working with children or young people is desirable
- Calm, patient and emotionally resilient
- Able to build positive relationships and maintain professional boundaries
- Passionate about supporting children
- Team Teach or similar training is desirable but not essential
