Role purpose
The Managing Consultant role is a senior delivery and leadership position. The role exists to lead high quality client engagements, shape pragmatic and impactful solutions, and strengthen the consulting capability through team leadership, coaching, and contribution to internal development. Managing Consultants are trusted to operate with a high degree of autonomy, balancing client outcomes, commercial responsibility, and people leadership. They play a critical role in translating our client’s values into day to day delivery standards and team behaviours.
Core accountabilities
- Own the successful delivery of client engagements or defined workstreams, ensuring outcomes meet agreed objectives, timelines, and quality expectations.
- Act as a primary day to day client contact, building trusted relationships and managing stakeholder expectations effectively.
- Shape solutions in partnership with clients, applying judgement to tailor approaches rather than relying on generic methodologies.
- Identify delivery risks early and take responsibility for resolution, escalating appropriately where required.
- Manage engagement level delivery economics, including scope, effort, and resourcing within agreed parameters.
- Contribute to proposals, scoping activity, and commercial discussions where appropriate.
- Balance quality, pace, and pragmatism in line with the consulting model.
- Lead small consulting teams on client engagements, setting clear direction, expectations, and ways of working.
- Coach and develop consultants through feedback, role modelling, and on the job support.
- Contribute to performance discussions and capability assessments for team members.
- Create an inclusive and psychologically safe environment that supports learning and high performance.
Core competencies and capability experience
This role is typically suited to individuals with around five to six years of consulting experience, though progression is based on capability and readiness rather than tenure alone. Managing Consultants are expected to demonstrate the following capabilities:
- Strong general management consulting capability, with the ability to flex across project and programme delivery, change initiatives, and technology enabled transformation.
- Well developed consulting fundamentals including structured problem solving, meeting facilitation, stakeholder management, data informed decision making, and clear written and visual communication.
- Confidence operating in client environments with senior stakeholders.
- The ability to lead others and take responsibility for outcomes, not just activity.
- Curiosity, ambition, and comfort working in a growing and evolving consulting business.
Measures of success
Success in the Managing Consultant role is demonstrated through:
- Consistently strong client outcomes and feedback.
- Reliable delivery against scope, quality, and timelines.
- Effective leadership and development of consulting colleagues.
- Constructive contribution to the team’s internal capability and culture.
- Demonstration of sound judgement, ownership, and professionalism.
Benefits and policies
Benefits, leave, pension, healthcare, and family friendly provisions are governed by policies and may be updated from time to time. This role is eligible for benefits in line with those policies.
