The Team
A&M's Infrastructure & Capital Projects (A&M INFRA) team combines deep sector expertise with A&M's hands-on, results-driven approach to help public- and private-sector clients address high-stakes questions across the infrastructure investment and project lifecycles.
Within A&M INFRA, our Economics and Power Markets capability brings together market insight, quantitative modelling and commercial judgement.
We examine how demand growth, renewable build-out, thermal retirements, interconnection, fuel and carbon prices, market design and regulation shape prices, dispatch, revenues and asset value.
Recent work and proposals have covered battery and long-duration storage, flexible generation, renewables, integrated flexibility platforms, interconnectors and emerging sources of electricity demand across GB and continental Europe.
Our analysis supports commercial due diligence, asset and portfolio valuation, market entry, strategy, revenue forecasting and policy assessment.
The Role
A&M INFRA is expanding its European Economics and Power Markets capability and is looking to recruit a Manager to join our fast-growing London practice.
This is a hands-on, client-facing role in which power-market modelling is a central and substantial part of the role .
The successful candidate will spend a significant part of their time developing, running and interpreting PLEXOS models and related analytical tools, and using those outputs to answer commercial questions for clients.
We are looking for someone who wants to do more than operate a model as a black box.
You will take ownership of model inputs and data, scenario design, calibration, validation, quality assurance, model runs and results interpretation.
You will translate hourly outputs - including wholesale prices, capture prices, spreads, dispatch, load factors and revenues - into clear implications for transactions, asset valuations and investment strategy.
The role offers significant ownership and the opportunity to help shape a growing European modelling platform, working with senior A&M colleagues and specialists across our international network.
Alongside modelling, you will lead workstreams, present to senior decision-makers, support proposals and thought leadership, and coach junior colleagues.
What makes this opportunity distinctive
- Power modelling will be core to your day-to-day work and will directly underpin the conclusions we deliver to clients.
- You will work across fast-evolving technologies and revenue models, including renewables, battery and long-duration storage, flexible generation, interconnectors and new sources of demand.
- You will help extend our modelling capability beyond wholesale markets, linking PLEXOS outputs with analysis of intraday, balancing, ancillary-service and capacity-market revenues.
- You will combine deep analytical work with commercial due diligence, strategy and direct client exposure, with meaningful responsibility from the outset.
Activities and Responsibilities
- Lead the development and application of fundamentals-based power-market models, with particular focus on PLEXOS, for GB and European client assignments.
- Own model inputs and assumptions covering electricity demand, generation capacity, renewable build-out, thermal retirements, fuel and carbon prices, interconnection, plant economics and policy or market-design changes.
- Design scenarios; run, calibrate and validate simulations; challenge results against historical data, market benchmarks and commercial logic; and maintain transparent, auditable quality assurance.
- Analyse hourly wholesale prices, capture prices, spreads, generation, dispatch, curtailment, load factors and asset revenues, identifying the drivers of value and risk.
- Apply modelling and market analysis to technologies including BESS and long-duration storage, flexible generation, renewables, hybrid or integrated flexibility portfolios, interconnectors and emerging electricity demand.
- Help develop complementary analysis for intraday, balancing, ancillary-service and capacity markets, and integrate multiple revenue streams into robust asset investment cases.
- Translate complex technical outputs into decision-ready conclusions for commercial due diligence, valuation, market entry, strategy and financing, presented through clear models, reports and presentations.
- Lead client workstreams, meetings and presentations; manage scope, timelines, risks and quality; and coach more junior team members.
- Contribute to business development, proposals, client relationships, market-facing thought leadership and the continued development of the team's analytical products and methods.
Qualifications
- At least six years of relevant experience in power markets, energy economics, market modelling, advisory, consulting or a closely related field.
- A bachelor's or master's degree in economics, energy systems, engineering, mathematics, finance, data science or another relevant quantitative discipline.
- Demonstrable hands-on experience using PLEXOS or comparable fundamentals-based power-market modelling software. Strong PLEXOS experience is preferred.
- Experience configuring, running and interrogating models - not only reviewing outputs - including model inputs, assumptions, scenarios, calibration, validation and quality assurance.
- Strong understanding of power-market fundamentals and the drivers of wholesale prices, dispatch, capture prices and asset revenues; knowledge of GB and/or European market structures.
- Experience applying quantitative analysis to investment, transaction, commercial or strategic questions, with the ability to connect technical results to asset value and risk.
- Experience in one or more of renewable generation, battery or long-duration storage, flexible generation, balancing and ancillary services, capacity markets, interconnection or electricity-demand forecasting is desirable.
- Strong quantitative and data-handling skills. Advanced Excel is required; experience with Python, SQL or other analytical tools is highly desirable.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to explain technical analysis clearly to senior clients and non-specialists.
- Proven ability to manage workstreams and deliver high-quality work to demanding timelines; willingness to travel when required.
Competencies
- Intellectual curiosity and a practical, hands-on approach to problem-solving.
- Rigour and attention to detail, with the confidence to challenge data, assumptions and model outputs.
- Commercial judgement: an ability to identify what matters to the investment decision rather than simply report analytical results.
- Clear and persuasive communication, turning complex analysis into concise, decision-useful advice.
- Ownership and resilience in a fast-paced environment, with sound judgement under pressure.
- Collaborative working style and ability to build effective relationships across disciplines, offices and seniority levels.
- Ability and willingness to coach junior colleagues and raise the quality of the team's analytical work.
- Entrepreneurial mindset, including identifying new client needs and helping turn modelling insight into propositions, thought leadership and follow-on work.
