About the role
We’re looking for a highly skilled and motivated Lead Utility Surveyor to join our growing team within the rail industry. In this key role, you will lead a team of utility surveyors, ensuring the accurate location, mapping, and documentation of underground utilities in compliance with PAS 128 standards.
You will be responsible for overseeing and conducting utility detection surveys using advanced techniques such as Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Electromagnetic Locators (EML). Collaborating closely with engineers, designers, and project managers, you’ll provide critical technical input throughout the project lifecycle. Your leadership and technical expertise will be essential in delivering high-quality, compliant survey outputs that support the successful planning and execution of rail infrastructure projects.

Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the planning, coordination, and execution of utility surveys in accordance with PAS 128 standards.
- Accurately locate, identify, and map underground utilities (e.g., gas, water, telecoms, electricity) using techniques such as Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Electromagnetic Location (EML) equipment.
- Interpret utility records and on-site findings to produce comprehensive and compliant survey documentation.
- Oversee the production of detailed utility survey drawings and reports, ensuring high-quality outputs aligned with client and industry specifications.
- Perform QA/QC reviews on survey data and drawings to guarantee accuracy and compliance with PAS 128 methodologies.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior surveyors and field teams.
- Liaise with clients, contractors, and project managers to understand project requirements and deliverables.
- Ensure all work is carried out safely, in compliance with health and safety regulations and best practices.
- Conduct site risk assessments and contribute to method statements prior to survey commencement.
- Stay current with industry developments, new technologies, and survey best practices, recommending improvements to internal processes.
About You:
- Proven experience in surveying, preferably within the rail or construction industries.
- Strong knowledge of survey equipment, techniques, and software.
- Ability to lead teams and work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Proactive, self-motivated, and able to work independently or as part of a team.
- Valid driving license and willingness to travel to various project sites nationwide.
