Do you have senior-level experience in finance, digital, governance or organisational leadership? Can you provide independent judgement and strategic insight while helping shape the future of a modern university? Buckinghamshire New University (BNU) is seeking an Independent Member to join its University Council and support the strategic leadership and governance of the institution.

The Role

As an Independent Member, you will help guide the strategic direction of the University, ensuring effective governance, responsible stewardship of resources and delivery of its long-term ambitions. This is an opportunity to use your expertise within a purpose-driven organisation that is committed to student success and widening access to higher education. The Council meets six times a year and members serve on at least one committee. There are also opportunities to support key University events throughout the year. The initial term of appointment is four years, with the possibility of a second term.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the educational mission and strategic direction of the University
  • Support effective governance and organisational stewardship
  • Safeguard financial sustainability and resources
  • Review and approve financial plans and major expenditure
  • Provide independent challenge and constructive guidance
  • Support regulatory compliance and good governance
  • Act as an ambassador for the University and its values
  • Promote equality, diversity and inclusion

This position is non-remunerated; however, reasonable expenses incurred whilst undertaking University duties will be reimbursed.

The Person

You will:

  • Bring significant expertise in finance or digital leadership
  • Have experience operating at senior leadership or board level
  • Understand the principles of good corporate governance
  • Be able to analyse complex information and exercise sound judgement
  • Demonstrate integrity, professionalism and excellent communication skills

Previous higher education experience is not essential.
