Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure the company’s activities comply with relevant health and safety regulations, including CDM (Construction Design and Management) Regulations.
- Ensure adherence to statutory and local governance, promoting best practice throughout the team.
- Provide expert advice on health and safety matters to senior leadership, project managers, and site teams.
- Support in the development, review, and update the organisation’s health and safety policies and procedures, aligned with the DIO MPP organisational arrangements, MoD JSP 375, industry standards and project-specific requirements.
- Champion best practice and continuous improvement in health and safety management.
- Review Designer and Contractor generated H&S documentation, including task specific risk assessments and method statements relating to high-risk activities, throughout pre-construction, construction, and operational handover phases.
- Close liaison with the Facility Operator and other stakeholders to ensure local arrangements are adhered to.
- Support the Principal Designer and Principal Contractor to identify potential hazards and implement effective risk control measures.
- Develop and deliver training programs to staff and subcontractors to promote safety awareness and compliance.
- Foster a culture of positive safety through regular communications, workshops, and meetings.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues across the team to identify improvement opportunities.
- Interface with base maintenance and operational teams to ensure H&S coordination across all functions.
- Assist with the investigation of accidents, incidents, and near-misses, ensuring root causes are identified and corrective actions are implemented.
- Maintain accurate records of incidents and prepare detailed reports for internal and external stakeholders.
- Conduct regular site inspections and audits to monitor compliance with health and safety standards.
- Collaborate with project teams to address non-conformities and ensure timely resolution of issues.
- Work closely with design teams, contractors, and regulatory bodies to ensure health and safety requirements are integrated into project planning and execution.
- Act as the primary point of contact for external audits and health and safety queries.
- Oversee Principal Contractor activities across all stages of works from pre-construction to handover, providing governance and assurance that work is compliant with base and regulatory standards.
- Support LfE activities for Programme Euston – helping to capture and share relevant LfE both to and from the Programme.
Key Requirements:
- Substantial experience in managing health and safety within construction, civil engineering, marine, or defence sector.
- A thorough understanding of the statutory framework, with particular emphasis on the CDM Regulations and other legislation relevant to complex infrastructure projects.
- A minimum of 10-years’ experience within a construction/engineering role, with proven experience in H&S management across various stages of the construction and engineering programme lifecycle.
- A strong educational foundation, ideally demonstrated through professional qualifications such as NEBOSH, HNC/HND, Degree, etc.
- Membership with a recognised professional body, such as IOSH or IIRSM, is desirable.
- The ability to lead and inspire teams, fostering a culture where health and safety is prioritised at every level of the organisation.
- Exceptional analytical and organisational skills, along with the ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences, from site operatives to senior executives.
- The ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and manage multiple priorities effectively.
- A proven track record of implementing innovative health and safety solutions that deliver measurable improvements.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to chair health and safety related meetings throughout the full programme life cycle.
