The predicted salary is between 80000 - 90000 £ per year.

This Power System & Product Development Engineer will report to the Network Access Manager and will work within the DSO directorate based in our London office. You will be a permanent employee. You will attract a salary of £80,574.00 and a bonus of 3%. This role can also offer blended working after a probationary period (6 months) – 3 days in the office and 2 days remote.

Job Purpose:

At UK Power Networks, we are building a smarter, more flexible grid that enables customers to connect faster and more affordably, supports decarbonisation, and unlocks the full potential of distributed energy. As a Power Systems & Product Development Engineer, you will be at the heart of this transformation, combining engineering excellence, data‐driven innovation, and real‐world delivery to create tools that make our network smarter every day. You will deliver digital products that solve complex power‐system challenges, using your Python and product development skills to directly influence how flexible connections and DERMS operate across our networks.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Product and project ownership
  • Lead the delivery of smart‐grid digital tools and technical products supporting flexible connections and DERMS integration
  • Provide training and produce processes to ensure business integration and deployment of new solutions
  • Technical analysis and power‐systems expertise
  • Perform power‐system studies (thermal, voltage, fault level) to identify network constraints and inform technical decisions for DERMS, flexibility procurement and network investments
  • Produce the engineering and data analysis, policies and design standards required to operate and improve active distribution networks and allow continued deployment of distributed energy resources
  • Programming and data science
  • Develop Python‐based tools and data pipelines for evolving needs
  • Use GitHub for version control, collaboration, and documentation of all codebases
  • Build dashboards and APIs to support evolving business needs
  • Stakeholder collaboration
  • Be the interface between the DSO, other teams, Connections, Planning, Operations and ISEngage with customers, IDNOs, vendors, and consultants to co‐design and deliver solutions
  • Represent UK Power Networks in external working groups
  • Mentoring and capability building
  • Support junior engineers and analysts with training, reviews, and technical guidance
  • Promote best practices in product and software development

You will need to be comfortable engaging with engineers, analysts, product teams, and senior partners, both inside and outside the business. You will work with diverse teams, bridging the gap between deep technical insight and actionable delivery, helping UK Power Networks remain at the forefront of the energy transition.

Qualifications:

Essential Qualifications:

  • Degree in power system engineering or similar
  • 7+ years of work experience within the energy sector
  • Technical background in power‐system analysis and operation
  • Experience with DER integration, flexible connection design and DERMS operation
  • Experience leading digital product development and agile technical projects
  • Experience in data analytics, with data and statistical analysis skills
  • Build, test, and deploy code‐based tools
  • Practical experience of power‐system modelling packages, including Power Factory
  • Excellent project and product management skills
  • Excellent partner management skills

Beneficial Qualifications And Experience:

  • Postgraduate degree (MSc, MPhil, PhD) in power systems engineering or other quantitative discipline
  • Chartered Engineer or working towards professional status
  • Awareness of the Distribution/Grid Code and National Grid Connection and Use of System Code (CUSC)
  • Knowledge of electricity network investment and operational planning processes (including technical & commercial options analysis)
  • Knowledge of energy markets, including pricing and regulatory frameworks
  • A project management qualification such as APMP or Prince2
